EPL: Manchester United Set to Face Difficulties During AFCON – Ruben Amorim Warns

Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, has openly acknowledged that the club will face a challenging period when several key players leave to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) later this season.

Amorim expressed his concerns ahead of the upcoming tournament, emphasizing that Manchester United could “suffer and struggle for a little while” when the competition begins. The 2026 AFCON is scheduled to kick off on December 21, 2025, and conclude with the final match on January 18, 2026.

During this crucial stage of the season, Amorim will be without some of his key attacking and defensive options. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are both expected to feature prominently for their national teams—Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively—while Noussair Mazraoui, the Moroccan international defender, is also likely to join his national side.

The Portuguese manager stressed that losing three vital players simultaneously could significantly impact the team’s performance, especially as this period coincides with a congested Premier League fixture list and potential FA Cup matches.

“We have built a balanced squad, but during AFCON, we will definitely feel the absence of key players. It’s a challenge that every big team faces when international duties overlap with club competitions,” Amorim reportedly said.

Manchester United are currently aiming to maintain consistency in their Premier League campaign, with Amorim working to restore stability and confidence within the team. The temporary loss of top talents like Mbeumo, Diallo, and Mazraoui could affect both attacking creativity and defensive solidity.

Football analysts believe Amorim may need to rely on younger talents or reshuffle his tactical setup to cope during the international period.
