Owen Hargreaves, the former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder, has recommended Arsenal target Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey during the summer transfer window.
Partey, whose current contract with Arsenal expires at the end of the season, has been the subject of speculation linking him with moves to top European clubs like Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
However, Hargreaves believes that if Arsenal decides to part ways with the Ghana international, they should turn to Wharton. The midfielder, according to Hargreaves, could be the ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s system at the Emirates Stadium.
“One player I really rate is Adam Wharton,” Hargreaves shared on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, discussing Partey’s possible departure. “He’s the kind of player who can make an impact in your starting XI [at Arsenal]. If Arteta had the chance to see him play, he’d certainly see him as a perfect fit. If Partey leaves, Wharton would be a solid replacement.”
Hargreaves also praised Wharton’s exceptional footballing intelligence, noting his advanced vision on the field. “What stands out about Adam is his ability to read the game. He’s often two steps ahead of everyone else. His vision and touch are remarkable—close to the best you’ll see in the Premier League,” he added.
Although Hargreaves admitted he would love to see Wharton at Manchester United, he mentioned that the unique system under coach Ruben Amorim might not be the ideal environment for him.
