The 2025/2026 English Premier League season began in electrifying fashion as Liverpool defeated Bournemouth 4-2 at Anfield on Friday night, setting the stage for what promises to be another unforgettable campaign.

Football fans had waited 82 long days for the return of club football, and this curtain-raiser offered everything supporters craved.

The match featured the traditional Anfield hymn, a strong debut from Hugo Ekitike, controversial VAR decisions, a disturbing racist incident, a stunning solo strike from Antoine Semenyo, and an exhilarating late finish. And the excitement has only just begun—nine more fixtures remain in Game Week 1.

“It feels great to welcome back the familiar thrill,” noted Clinton McDubus, a leading football analyst and podcaster, in a chat with LMSINT MEDIA.

“Yes, we had other competitions, but nothing compares to the rhythm and intensity of Premier League football. This season promises fireworks.”

Liverpool Begin Strong Amidst Emotional Tribute

For Liverpool, winning their opening home fixture was crucial. The night carried additional weight as tributes poured in for the late Diogo Jota, making the victory even more emotional.

Under new manager Arne Slot, the Reds showed resilience against a spirited Bournemouth comeback and emerged with all three points. With pundits and fans alike tipping them as title favourites, Liverpool look poised for another dominant run.

McDubus echoed this sentiment:

“They enter the season as clear favourites. Their squad looks title-worthy, strengthened by smart signings and trimming inconsistent performers. If they manage to secure Alexander Isak, they’ll be frighteningly strong. Still, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City will push them hard.”

Striker Wars: New Signings Set the Tone

One of Liverpool’s marquee signings, Hugo Ekitike, has already netted two goals in two matches, proving his worth instantly. The 23-year-old joins a new wave of attacking talent arriving in England this summer.

  • Arsenal invested in Viktor Gyökeres.
  • Manchester United landed Benjamin Šeško.
  • Chelsea added João Pedro to their frontline.

These new arrivals could prove decisive in the title race.

McDubus added:

“It’s tough to pick one standout, but Gyökeres and Ekitike seem primed for 20-goal seasons. Both have the power to light up the Premier League.”

Survival Fight: Leeds, Sunderland, and Burnley Under the Spotlight

At the bottom, newly promoted sides Leeds United, Sunderland, and Burnley face the challenge of survival. Many predict a swift return to the Championship, but McDubus sees potential in Sunderland’s squad.

“Sunderland spent wisely—over £130 million on smart, balanced signings. On the surface, it looks like reckless spending, but in reality, they’re building a competitive team. I think they’ll surprise critics.”

Newcastle United: Dark Clouds Ahead?

While some teams look strengthened, others face uncertainty. McDubus predicts that Newcastle United could be the season’s biggest underachievers.

“Unless major changes come before the deadline, Newcastle will struggle. Their transfer window has been poor, and if they lose Isak, they’re in serious trouble. History shows their Champions League commitments affected domestic form—and this time, it could be worse.”
