The Enugu State Government has initiated the disbursement of gratuities to retired civil servants who exited service from January 2024. This move aligns with Governor Dr. Peter Mbah’s directive to clear outstanding benefits owed to retirees.
Verification Process for Gratuity Payment
Confirming the commencement of payments, the State Accountant General, Anthony Okenwa, disclosed that retirees eligible for gratuities had undergone biometric verification. This mandatory process, introduced by Governor Mbah, aims to eliminate ghost workers from the state’s payroll and pension records.
According to Okenwa, the backlog of gratuities spanning from 2010 to 2024 remains under review. He assured that Governor Mbah is committed to settling all inherited pension and gratuity arrears.
Clearing the Backlog in Phases
“The payment of gratuities has started with retirees who left service in January 2024. For those who retired between 2010 and 2024, payments will be made in phases upon completion of the verification exercise,” Okenwa explained.
Governor Mbah had pledged during his 2023 election campaign to clear all outstanding pension and gratuity arrears inherited from previous administrations. This latest development underscores his commitment to fulfilling that promise.
