The Nigeria Police Force has officially summoned Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, to appear before authorities over alleged disobedience of a government-imposed restriction on Durbar festivities during the recent Sallah celebrations.

A confidential letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, mandates that the former Emir appear at the Force Intelligence Department headquarters in Abuja by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Authorities had earlier issued a security advisory suspending all Durbar processions due to prevailing safety concerns during the Sallah festivities. However, despite the warning, Emir Sanusi reportedly led a Durbar-style procession and made an appearance at the Kano State Government House, drawing large crowds. It was noted that while the Emir’s entourage was in vehicles rather than the customary horse ride, the gathering still violated the police directive.

Related Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

In connection with the alleged breach, the police are also investigating a violent incident involving members of the Emir’s procession. A 20-year-old resident identified as Usman Sagiru from Sharifai Quarters was arrested for allegedly participating in a fatal attack on vigilante personnel following the Eid prayers held on March 30, 2025.

As part of the expanding investigation, the Kano State Police Command has further invited Alhaji Wada Isyaku, known traditionally as Shamakin Kano, for questioning regarding possible involvement in disregarding the official ban on public Durbar activities.

This developing situation highlights the tensions surrounding the role of traditional institutions and law enforcement directives during public religious events.
