Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State and a key figure in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has dismissed the recent wave of defections among Nigerian political elites as political theatrics lacking real electoral influence. Speaking in Kano State, El-Rufai emphasized that election outcomes are determined by the electorate, not by high-profile politicians, governors, or even the president.
In a bold statement aimed at reshaping political narratives ahead of the next election cycle, El-Rufai criticized the media hype surrounding political defections. He asserted that such moves often serve as distractions and do not reflect the will of the people.
“Defections are great for headlines, but they don’t win elections,” El-Rufai said. “If a candidate lacks grassroots support, then titles and positions mean nothing.”
People, Not Power Brokers, Hold the Real Influence
El-Rufai reiterated that political godfathers and powerful figures within the corridors of power cannot override the collective voice of the Nigerian people. He cited personal experience from the 2023 elections, where despite being a sitting governor, he failed to secure Kaduna State for the presidential candidate he supported.
“I worked hard to deliver my state, but the people decided otherwise. The electorate has the final say,” he emphasized.
This comes shortly after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and former vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). More governors and legislators are reportedly preparing to make similar moves.
Despite these developments, El-Rufai insists that such shifts in party allegiance hold little weight in influencing true democratic outcomes. According to him, “a governor has one vote, just like every other citizen.”
