Some travelers abducted along Emure-ile Road in Ekiti State have finally regained their freedom after spending several days in captivity. The victims, who were traveling in an 18-seater bus, were kidnapped on Sunday night while returning from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

Incident Details

The gunmen, heavily armed and familiar with the local terrain, ambushed the travelers shortly after leaving Eporo-Ekiti. They demanded ransom payments of ₦30 million per person from the victims’ families. However, after intense negotiations, the victims were released early Wednesday morning following payments ranging from ₦1 million to ₦2 million.

Survivor’s Account

Mr. Sunday Emmanuel, the driver of the bus, shared his harrowing experience. He revealed that the kidnappers fed the victims only garri mixed with red oil and water throughout their ordeal. Despite the harsh conditions, the captives were not subjected to severe physical harm, except for minor bruises sustained while navigating through the dense bushes.

Emmanuel disclosed that their abductors, who claimed to be from Niger Republic, were well-armed with military-grade machine guns and ample ammunition. The group trekked through the forest at night and rested briefly at dawn.

“We were left in Ago Paanu, Owo area, Ikare Road. Local residents came out to assist us,” Emmanuel said. He also confirmed that all the passengers, including a female corps member and another woman, were released unharmed.

How It Happened

According to Emmanuel, the ambush occurred just five minutes after the group passed a military checkpoint near Emure-Ekiti. He expressed shock that soldiers at the checkpoint might have heard the gunshots but took no action.

“The kidnappers knew the terrain well, taking us through paths used for cattle herding. Despite their small number—just three men—their weapons made resistance impossible,” he recounted.
