The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), through its Kaduna Zonal Command, has confirmed the arrest of 19 suspected internet fraudsters in Niger State.
According to an official report, the suspects were apprehended in Lapai Local Government Area on Friday, September 19, 2025, following credible intelligence reports that linked them to various forms of cybercrime activities.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that the operation led to the arrest of 18 male suspects and one female suspect. The coordinated raid was carried out after weeks of surveillance and monitoring of their illicit online engagements.
Security expert Zagazola Makama provided further insight into the items recovered from the suspects during the operation. Among the seized exhibits were:
- A Honda Civic car
- 33 mobile phones
- Five laptops
- A power generator
- Three Bluetooth speakers
- A white calabash
- Other fetish items allegedly connected to ritual practices
The EFCC emphasized that all suspects are currently in custody and undergoing thorough investigation. The Commission added that once the investigation process is finalized, the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
This recent operation highlights the EFCC’s renewed efforts to clamp down on cybercrime, popularly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo,” which has become a growing concern across Nigeria. Authorities maintain that such arrests are crucial in deterring young people from engaging in fraudulent online activities.
The EFCC has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may be linked to internet fraud.
