The Edo State Police Command has reported a significant crackdown on criminal activities in 2025, arresting a total of 821 suspects involved in various criminal offences across the state. This information was disclosed by Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, during a detailed press briefing highlighting the Command’s operational achievements for the outgoing year.

Breakdown of Arrests and Criminal Activities
Commissioner Agbonika revealed that among the 821 suspects apprehended:
- 39 individuals were arrested for armed robbery.
- 171 suspects were apprehended for kidnapping.
- 117 persons were charged with murder.
- 62 individuals were involved in rape or sexual assault cases.
- 239 suspects were linked to cult-related activities.
- 36 individuals were caught for unlawful possession of firearms.
- 157 persons were arrested for other criminal offences.
In addition, the Command successfully rescued 377 kidnap victims, ensuring their safe return to their families, a move that underscores the police’s proactive stance against violent crimes in the state.
Recovery of Firearms, Vehicles, and Ammunition
The Edo State Police also recorded notable recoveries during the period under review, including:
- 11 stolen vehicles retrieved.
- 188 firearms of various calibres seized.
- 422 assorted ammunition recovered from criminal hideouts and suspects.
These recoveries highlight the Command’s efforts to curb armed crimes and ensure safer communities across Edo State.
Enhanced Security During the Yuletide Season
In line with the intelligence-driven policing strategy, the Edo Police Command intensified security measures across the state, particularly during the festive period. Commissioner Agbonika noted that the Command implemented:
- Enhanced visibility policing across major towns and cities.
- Strategic patrols to monitor high-risk areas.
- Targeted stop-and-search operations to deter criminal activity.
- Intelligence-led deployments to preempt potential threats.
