The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers is holding a crucial summit in Accra, Ghana, to develop a roadmap for managing the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the regional alliance.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this high-level meeting aims to tackle the political and logistical implications of the recent decision by the three Sahel nations to exit ECOWAS. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who chairs the Council, shared this update through a statement by his Media and Communications Strategy Special Assistant, Alkasim Abdulkadir.

Key Focus: Contingency Planning and Institutional Adjustments

This extraordinary session stems from a resolution passed during the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, directing the Council of Ministers to outline strategies and contingency actions to manage the disengagement process of the three countries.

The ECOWAS Commission is expected to present several key documents, which include:

A structured withdrawal plan for the affected countries.
Suspension guidelines for ECOWAS programs in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
Recommendations to maintain the smooth flow of people, goods, and services across the region.

Additionally, discussions will cover the relocation of ECOWAS agencies and institutions currently operating in the withdrawing nations, to avoid disruption in community operations and integration initiatives.
