The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has named Nigeria’s former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, as the head of its Election Observation Mission for the upcoming Côte d’Ivoire presidential election scheduled for October 25, 2025.

According to an official statement released by ECOWAS, the election observation mission will be deployed from October 19 to 29, 2025, in alignment with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which guides the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections across member states.

The regional bloc emphasized that Osinbajo’s leadership role is crucial in ensuring transparency and fairness during the electoral process in Côte d’Ivoire. His experience as a democratic leader and constitutional expert is expected to strengthen the integrity and credibility of the election monitoring efforts.

This appointment reflects ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to promoting peace, democratic stability, and credible electoral processes within the West African subregion. By sending high-profile observers, the organization aims to mitigate electoral tensions, encourage political inclusiveness, and ensure that elections adhere to international democratic standards.

Professor Osinbajo, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 2015 to 2023, has been widely recognized for his contributions to governance reforms, economic policies, and justice sector improvements. His selection demonstrates ECOWAS’s confidence in his diplomatic capabilities and leadership track record.

The Election Observation Mission will consist of a team of experts, including political analysts, legal specialists, election administrators, and representatives from civil society organizations. They will be responsible for observing the pre-election environment, voting day activities, and post-election developments in Côte d’Ivoire.

This initiative forms part of ECOWAS’s broader strategy to ensure regional stability through credible electoral management and adherence to democratic values. The findings and recommendations from the observation mission are expected to guide future electoral processes across West Africa.
