Delta’s Move to APC is for the State’s Progress – Okowa Explains

Former Delta State Governor and ex-vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has clarified the reasons behind his and other political leaders’ recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during a grand reception hosted by the APC national leadership in Delta State, Okowa emphasized that the shift was driven by a collective vision for Delta State’s development and long-term progress.

The event, held on Monday, marked the official welcome of key political figures, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and several legislators, into the APC fold. According to Okowa, the decision was not made lightly but with deep reflection on what would best serve the people of Delta.

Why We Joined APC – Okowa

Dr. Okowa stated that serving as governor for eight years without presidential support posed significant challenges for development in Delta State. He explained that the move to the ruling party was essential to ensure the state’s better connection to federal resources and opportunities.

“April 23, 2025, was a defining day,” Okowa noted. “Some questioned our choice, but history shows that leadership sometimes requires a shift in direction to achieve collective good. Our choice was not about personal interest but about unlocking Abuja’s goodwill for our people.”

He further stressed that Delta State has consistently contributed to Nigeria’s economic engine, particularly through oil and gas, yet suffered avoidable development setbacks due to political disconnect from the federal center.

“We support Governor Sheriff Oborevwori because he’s delivering visible development,” Okowa added. “But to maximize our efforts, the state must align with national power and resources. This defection enables us to tap into greater federal support for infrastructure, jobs, and prosperity.”

This mass defection, which includes state and national lawmakers, highlights a strategic political realignment aimed at accelerating development initiatives across Delta State.
