Delta State's Political Shift: Oborevwori And Okowa's Historic Defection To APC

In a landmark political development, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, have officially transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant shift, described by President Bola Tinubu as the most substantial political realignment in Nigeria’s history, was celebrated at a grand reception in Asaba.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu emphasized the uniqueness of this event, noting that it’s unprecedented for a sitting governor and his predecessor to defect alongside the entire party structure, encompassing ward, local government, state, and national levels, including elected and appointed officials. He urged the new members to view themselves not as newcomers but as integral co-owners of the APC, contributing to the nation’s progress.

The event witnessed the presence of prominent APC figures, including National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Imo State Governor and Progressive Governors Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, and Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo. Their attendance underscored the significance of this political development.

Governor Oborevwori articulated that the decision to join the APC was driven by a commitment to Delta State’s advancement. He highlighted the necessity of aligning with the federal government to unlock greater opportunities for the state. Former Governor Okowa echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the move was in Delta State’s best interest, aiming to enhance its influence and access to federal resources.

This political shift has not been without contention. Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, a longstanding APC member, has asserted his leadership within the party in Delta State, leading to discussions about the party’s internal dynamics and leadership structures.
