Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has officially graduated 6,401 students during its 2023/2024 academic session. Among these, 830 students earned postgraduate degrees, highlighting the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

In a major announcement during the 17th Convocation Ceremony, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori granted automatic employment to the best graduating student, Okwa Favour Oghenemine, a brilliant Mathematics scholar from the Faculty of Science who achieved an outstanding 4.95 CGPA. The Governor explained that this honor continues DELSU’s tradition of celebrating academic excellence.

The postgraduate degrees awarded included 154 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 438 Master’s degrees, and 238 Postgraduate Diplomas.

Governor Oborevwori congratulated all the new graduates, commending their dedication, discipline, and academic achievements. He urged them to be exemplary representatives of Delta State University as they move forward into various fields.

However, the ceremony was not without a firm administrative decision: the Governor ordered the revocation of the contract for DELSU’s long-abandoned Senate Building, which has remained incomplete for over 22 years. This move aims to reassign the project to a qualified contractor to facilitate its swift completion.

The Governor’s decision came after Professor Samuel Asagba, DELSU’s Vice-Chancellor, appealed for the completion of the Senate building. In response, Governor Oborevwori instructed Professor Nyerowho Tonukari, the Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, to initiate the revocation process immediately.

Meanwhile, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, General Alexander Ogomudia, emphasized the urgent need to complete ongoing and abandoned projects across the university. He also reminded the graduating students of their responsibility to serve as worthy ambassadors of DELSU.

During his address, Professor Asagba proudly announced that DELSU has achieved 100% accreditation for all its academic programs. Additionally, he highlighted that the institution was ranked 20th among over 300 universities in Nigeria and 3rd among state-owned universities, according to recent rankings (source)
