Defection Tension: Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf Clash Over Alleged Pressure on Kano Officials

Political uncertainty continues to deepen in Kano State following fresh allegations by the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who accused the current state government of exerting pressure on public office holders to abandon the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

According to Kwankwaso, officials serving under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, including elected local government chairmen, are allegedly being compelled to sign documents suggesting their intention to defect from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the reports reaching him as troubling and capable of undermining internal party unity.

Kwankwaso made the claims public through a statement shared on his verified social media platforms, where he expressed disappointment over what he described as a dangerous political development. He alleged that affected officials were being forced to either publicly align with rival political camps or risk facing consequences from the state government.

The former governor stated that it was unfortunate for any administration to descend to such methods, adding that the situation had created anxiety among party loyalists across the state. He urged members of the Kwankwasiyya movement to remain vigilant and not dismiss the matter as insignificant.

Despite his strong condemnation, Kwankwaso advised local government chairmen and councillors who may be facing pressure to comply temporarily if doing so would help them avoid victimisation or undue harassment, stressing that their personal safety and political survival should come first.

In a swift response, the Kano State Government dismissed the allegation. The Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, clarified that there was no form of coercion involved in the ongoing political consultations. According to him, participation in any defection-related discussions is entirely based on individual choice.

Waiya explained that political parties are free to engage willing members or officials who wish to realign, insisting that no government official is being forced to defect against their will. He added that reports suggesting intimidation or compulsion were inaccurate and misleading.

The controversy comes amid persistent speculation that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be considering a move from the NNPP to the APC ahead of future elections. Although the governor has not publicly confirmed such intentions, the rumours have continued to fuel political tension within the ruling party in Kano State.

Governor Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election under the NNPP platform, is widely regarded as a close political associate and protégé of Kwankwaso. However, recent developments have reportedly strained the relationship between both men, with factions within the party taking sides as consultations intensify.

As political uncertainty grows, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has openly reaffirmed his loyalty to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya political ideology. Sources disclosed that Gwarzo paid a courtesy visit to Kwankwaso at his Miller Road residence shortly after returning from a religious trip to Saudi Arabia.

Party insiders revealed that the visit was aimed at personally reassuring Kwankwaso of the deputy governor’s continued commitment to the NNPP and the broader Kwankwasiyya movement. The visit is being interpreted by observers as a strategic signal amid ongoing defection talks.

Further investigations indicate that several high-ranking party members and government officials have also restated their allegiance to Kwankwaso. These include the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Kofar Mata; the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor, Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso; and the NNPP factional chairman in Kano State, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa.

A senior party figure described these declarations of loyalty as a strong indication that influential voices within both the government and the party structure remain firmly aligned with Kwankwaso, despite ongoing rumours of political realignment.

Political analysts believe the sustained defection speculation has exposed widening cracks within the NNPP in Kano State, with rival blocs intensifying negotiations ahead of possible shifts in allegiance. As events continue to unfold, the political atmosphere in the state remains charged, with party members and residents closely monitoring the next moves from both Governor Yusuf and his former political mentor.
