At least 70 lives have been lost following a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Niger State earlier today.
The tragic incident unfolded along the Dikko-Maje Road, directly opposite Badeggi Fuelling Station in Suleja Local Government Area. According to Kumar Tsukwam, the Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the death toll has risen to 70 and could increase as more information comes in.
What Happened?
Eyewitness accounts reveal that a petrol tanker carrying fuel overturned on the road. A second tanker was brought in to transfer the fuel from the damaged one. However, as the transfer was being arranged, locals—primarily youths and women—gathered to scoop the spilt fuel.
While fuel scooping continued, a loud explosion occurred, sparking a raging fire that engulfed both vehicles and everyone nearby.

An eyewitness described the harrowing scene:
“The explosion happened in an instant, trapping many of those scooping fuel. The fire spread rapidly, leaving several people, including women, burnt beyond recognition. Despite warnings about the dangers, the crowd ignored them and met a tragic end.”
Impact of the Explosion
- Over 70 people confirmed dead, with many more sustaining severe burns and injuries.
- Several houses and shops in the vicinity were completely destroyed in the resulting inferno.
- Emergency response efforts were delayed, leaving locals to flee the area to avoid further harm.
FRSC Confirmation
FRSC Sector Commander Kumar Tsukwam confirmed the incident, saying:
“I have received the report of the incident and am currently compiling all details.”
Governor’s Reaction
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed profound shock over the tragic event. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the incident as “heartbreaking and unfortunate.”
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and injured, urging residents to prioritize safety and act responsibly in such situations. Additionally, the governor has directed relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to take immediate action to address the aftermath of the explosion.
The governor also appealed to security agencies to ensure proper security measures in the area to prevent further chaos.
