Deadly Violence In Nigeria: A Church Schism Turns Tragic

A deadly conflict has erupted in Nigeria, resulting in the loss of three lives and significant destruction. According to reports from the United Methodist News Service, this violence stems from a division within the United Methodist Church (UMC) over its stance on LGBTQ policies.

The tragic events unfolded in Taraba State, northeastern Nigeria, where a confrontation between members of opposing factions turned deadly. A member of the United Methodist Church was fatally shot, while two young children, aged 2 and 4, perished when homes were set on fire. These children were related to the overseer of a United Methodist school and nursery. Additionally, at least 10 others sustained injuries during the clashes.

Root of the Conflict

The division traces back to the UMC’s historic decision at its General Conference in May 2024 to repeal longstanding bans on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriages. This policy shift has caused intense disagreement, leading to the creation of the Global Methodist Church (GMC), a more conservative breakaway faction.

Despite the repeal, the UMC allowed regional conferences to set their own policies on LGBTQ matters. In the West Africa Central Conference, which includes Nigeria, marriage remains restricted to unions between a man and a woman, aligning with local laws. These differing interpretations of faith and governance have fueled tensions between the two groups.

Calls for Peace

Local United Methodist bishops strongly condemned the violence and pleaded for calm. In a statement, they expressed their outrage over the incident, especially since it involves individuals who were once united under the same faith.

“We urge an immediate end to the violence and ask all parties to avoid spreading misinformation that incites further conflict,” the bishops stated.

Similarly, the Assembly of Bishops of the Global Methodist Church acknowledged the tragic loss of life and called on both sides to act as agents of peace. They emphasized their commitment to investigating the events thoroughly.

“We mourn the loss of human life and decry all forms of violence. We encourage reconciliation and a commitment to peace from all parties involved,” their statement read.

The Global Methodist Church officially launched earlier this year, following disagreements over LGBTQ policies within the UMC. While the UMC has a significant global presence, its debates on inclusivity have highlighted deep cultural and theological divides, particularly between its U.S. and African delegations.
