Dalung Debunks Dumebi Kachikwu’s ADC Hijack Claims

Solomon Dalung, who previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports Development, has refuted claims made by Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, regarding an alleged hijacking of the party by the David Mark-led coalition.

Speaking on Lunchtime Politics, a Channels Television political affairs programme, Dalung emphasized on Thursday that the coalition’s adoption of the ADC had strictly adhered to the proper procedures. He clarified that no hijacking took place, countering Kachikwu’s earlier accusations that the coalition took over the party without consulting important stakeholders.

It is worth noting, as reported by LMSINT MEDIA, that Dumebi Kachikwu had previously claimed the coalition usurped control of the party, failing to involve key figures within the party in the process.

Dalung explained that discussions surrounding the coalition had been ongoing for approximately 18 months, with active participation from crucial stakeholders of the ADC. He further mentioned that these stakeholders were present and took part in the unveiling of the coalition.

He elaborated by stating, “The chairman of the board of trustees of the party was in attendance. So, it wasn’t a hijack because the members of the party were there, and the coalition elements were there to witness the transition of leadership.”

According to Dalung, Kachikwu might have been unaware of these developments due to being out of touch with recent activities within the party, which could have contributed to his misunderstanding of the situation. Dalung added that although Kachikwu had the right to express his concerns, the ADC under its new leadership would handle the issues appropriately.

The former sports minister reminded the public that the coalition was formally inaugurated on a Wednesday, with David Mark, a former President of the Nigerian Senate, being named interim chairman of the party. Additionally, Rauf Aregbesola, who previously held the office of Minister of Interior and served as Osun State governor, was appointed as the secretary. This change in leadership came after Ralph Nwosu, the previous chairman of the ADC, handed over the party’s reins at a significant event held in Abuja.

Dalung’s clarification intends to settle speculations that the coalition had sidelined existing party leaders. He underlined that everyone was adequately involved, and the transition was transparent and legitimate, thereby invalidating any claims of a forceful takeover.
