Tension Rises as Confusion Trails Anambra APC Delegate Election
The All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in Anambra State has plunged into confusion, with allegations emerging that the eight-member congress committee has gone into hiding, further fueling internal discord within the party.
Held across 326 wards in 21 local government areas, the election aimed to elect delegates for the upcoming gubernatorial primaries. However, the delay in announcing the results has left the seven aspirants cleared by the APC national secretariat in Abuja in suspense.
Rising Tension Among Governorship Aspirants
Among those vying for the APC ticket are Sir Paul Chukwuma, Prof. Obiora Francis Okonkwo, and Prince Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu. The uncertainty surrounding the congress results has heightened anxiety, with party members suspecting manipulation.
Reports suggest that the state leadership may be attempting to influence the process, raising concerns about the credibility of the primaries scheduled for April 5, 2025.
Allegations of Internal Manipulation
Accusations are surfacing regarding the involvement of state party officials, who are allegedly favoring different aspirants. The apparent factionalization is exacerbating the already tense political atmosphere, raising fears of an internal crisis that could weaken the party’s chances in the November 8, 2025, governorship election.
Despite the turmoil, Anambra APC Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, dismissed the allegations, stating that while challenges existed, they were not severe enough to derail the process.

Emerging voting patterns indicate that three aspirants—one each from Anambra North, Central, and South—are gaining significant momentum. However, party insiders warn that the unresolved disputes could trigger a party implosion if not properly managed.
A senior APC official in the state voiced concerns about the potential consequences, stating:
“With the delegate elections largely concluded, the focus now shifts to the Election Supervision Committee. It is crucial to maintain transparency and fairness in result collation to safeguard the party’s credibility. Any mismanagement could jeopardize APC’s chances in the governorship election.”

The election process was marred in certain areas by altercations and alleged vote manipulation, as rival aspirants attempted to sway the outcome. Instances of violence and inducement attempts were reported, highlighting the intense struggle for control within the party.
Nonetheless, APC members in Anambra have demonstrated resilience, resisting financial incentives and violent tactics to compromise the process. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are urging the party leadership to prioritize unity and uphold democratic principles to prevent further division.
