Christmas Chicken Sales Expected to Decline in Oyo State

17 / 100 SEO Score

Poultry farmers in Oyo State are bracing for reduced chicken sales during the upcoming Christmas season, citing economic challenges and rising production costs as the primary causes.

According to Mr. Josiah Adebola, Chairman of the Livestock and Poultry Farmers Union (LPFU) in Oyo State, the cost of poultry feed, drugs, and other farming essentials has surged significantly, putting many farmers in a tight spot.

In a statement given to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, Adebola highlighted that the increasing cost of production is forcing some poultry farmers to abandon the business altogether. Those still in the trade are struggling to stay afloat, and they anticipate hiking chicken prices to recover their expenses.

High Chicken Prices May Affect Demand

Adebola explained that due to the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians, the higher prices of chicken could lead to reduced demand during the festive season. He warned that many consumers might resort to purchasing imported frozen chicken and turkey, despite the potential health risks associated with these products.

“Many farmers are struggling to make ends meet under these circumstances. With the rising costs, there’s no way chicken prices won’t increase. Unfortunately, this will discourage many Nigerians from buying live poultry,” he said.

The Call for Support

To address these challenges, Adebola appealed to charitable organizations, churches, and philanthropists to support local poultry farmers by buying chickens for distribution to the less privileged during the holiday season.

Additionally, he urged the government to introduce favorable economic policies to ease the burden on farmers and promote growth in the agricultural sector.

The Future of Poultry Farming

The current situation paints a grim picture for poultry farming in Oyo State, but with adequate support and policy intervention, the industry could recover. Consumers are encouraged to prioritize locally sourced chicken to support farmers and ensure food safety during the festive season.
