During a high-profile diplomatic meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Russia commended China for playing a transformative role in reshaping global power dynamics and challenging outdated colonial structures.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a strategic conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the BRICS Council session in Brazil, acknowledged China’s proactive leadership in ushering in a multipolar world order.
Referencing an old Chinese adage, “May you not live in an era of change,” Lavrov highlighted the significance of the current global shift. “Today, China is undeniably one of the leading forces of global transformation, and perhaps such a shift is both necessary and overdue,” Lavrov stated.
He echoed Minister Yi’s stance, emphasizing the ongoing global tension between nations striving to maintain a unipolar global system—predominantly shaped by Western powers—and those advocating for a multipolar framework grounded in mutual respect and sovereign equality.
Lavrov further stressed that the emerging world order must align with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, particularly the concept of equal sovereignty among nations.
He also underscored the pivotal role of Russia, China, the BRICS alliance, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in leading the call for global justice, fairness, and balanced international cooperation.
“This strategic responsibility compels us to fulfill the visions articulated by our national leaders,” Lavrov added.
Additionally, Lavrov informed Wang Yi about the ongoing preparations for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Russia as part of the upcoming 80th anniversary celebration of the Great Victory, a historically significant event in Russian history.
