Cabal Allegedly Prevented Buhari From Releasing Approved Funds, Undermining National Security – Former NSA Monguno Reveals

Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd.), has disclosed that internal power struggles within Nigeria’s Presidency allegedly stalled the release of funds approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari, a situation he says negatively affected national security operations.

According to Monguno, although President Buhari approved financial allocations meant for the Office of the National Security Adviser during his administration, some of those funds never reached their intended destination. He explained that influential figures operating within the corridors of power deliberately blocked the disbursement of the money, thereby limiting the effectiveness of security agencies at critical moments.

Monguno served as Nigeria’s National Security Adviser from 2015 until 2023, overseeing the country’s security architecture during a period marked by terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and other internal threats. His revelation sheds light on the internal challenges faced by the security sector beyond battlefield realities, pointing instead to bureaucratic resistance and political interference.

The former NSA made this disclosure in a newly released book titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari. The publication provides insight into Buhari’s leadership journey, policy decisions, and governance struggles, including behind-the-scenes obstacles that shaped his presidency.

The biography was authored by Charles Omole and officially unveiled at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, drawing the attention of political leaders, policymakers, and public commentators. The book aims to document the former president’s legacy while also revealing internal governance issues that were largely unknown to the public during his tenure.

Monguno’s account adds a new dimension to ongoing national conversations about security funding, governance transparency, and the influence of unelected power blocs within government institutions. His statements suggest that the effectiveness of leadership decisions can be weakened when institutional processes are manipulated by vested interests.
