British Envoy, Governors Visit Anthony Joshua in Lagos Hospital After Fatal Accident

The Deputy Head of Mission at the British High Commission, Simon Field, recently visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in a Lagos hospital following a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The visit underscores the close monitoring by British officials of the developments surrounding the incident.

According to a statement from Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Field not only met with Joshua but also engaged in discussions with both Governor Dapo Abiodun and his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as authorities coordinate responses and provide necessary support.

“The British High Commission was formally notified about the accident. Officials from the Mission are actively monitoring the developments and are maintaining contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government. The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Simon Field, personally visited the hospital, met with Anthony Joshua, and conferred with both governors. Families of the deceased have also been contacted through the High Commission,” the official statement said.

The accident, which occurred around midday on Monday, involved a Toyota Lexus jeep transporting Anthony Joshua and three other passengers. Tragically, two passengers lost their lives in the crash. They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British national, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.

In the aftermath of the incident, Governor Dapo Abiodun immediately visited the Lagos hospital where Joshua was receiving urgent medical care. He was subsequently joined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both governors stayed at the hospital for several hours to ensure Joshua received the highest level of medical attention.

Speaking on the hospital visit, Governor Abiodun stated:

“Upon receiving news of the accident, I immediately rushed to the hospital. I was later joined by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Together, we took charge of the situation, personally supervised Anthony Joshua’s medical care, and remained on-site for over seven hours to oversee his treatment.”
