President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially forwarded a comprehensive list of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Nigerian Senate for screening and approval. This development comes just a few days after he previously submitted an initial batch containing three nominees.
The announcement was confirmed through a formal statement released on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The statement emphasized that the President had communicated with the leadership of the National Assembly through two separate letters addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In the letters, President Tinubu called for speedy consideration and confirmation of the nominees, stressing the importance of timely approval to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence worldwide.
According to the communication, the nomination list is divided into two categories:
- 15 Career Ambassador Nominees
These individuals are seasoned professionals within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who have built their careers in diplomatic service. Their postings are expected to enhance Nigeria’s long-standing diplomatic relationships and promote national interests through structured engagement. - 17 Non-Career Ambassador Nominees
This group includes notable public figures and individuals appointed based on political, professional, or strategic contributions at national levels. Among these nominees are Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode, both well-known political actors and public commentators who have previously held significant influence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The nomination marks another major step by the Tinubu administration toward reorganizing Nigeria’s foreign mission leadership to align with current global realities. Once confirmed, the ambassadors will represent Nigeria in various countries, strengthen bilateral ties, facilitate trade opportunities, and ensure that the interests of Nigerians abroad are effectively protected.
The Senate is expected to begin the confirmation process promptly, in accordance with the President’s request for accelerated action.
