Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima‘s planned trip to represent the country at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa has been abruptly canceled. The cancellation occurred after a foreign object struck and damaged the plane’s cockpit windscreen while on a stopover at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York.
The information was disclosed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy. The incident occurred just as Vice President Shettima and his delegation were preparing to continue their journey to the Pacific island nation of Samoa.
Details of the Incident:
According to the statement released Thursday night, the foreign object significantly damaged the aircraft’s cockpit windscreen, making it unsafe for the plane to continue its journey. As a result, President Bola Tinubu immediately stepped in to ensure Nigeria’s representation at the summit, authorizing a ministerial delegation to take over Shettima’s duties.
The President’s swift decision designated the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abass Lawal, as the head of the delegation, which will now represent Nigeria at the summit. The event, which started on October 21, 2024, is scheduled to run until October 26 in Apia, the capital of Samoa.
Revised Plans:
While the aircraft undergoes repairs, Vice President Shettima, along with Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, returned to Nigeria, cutting their diplomatic trip short. Meanwhile, the ministerial delegation is expected to carry out the responsibilities that were initially assigned to the Vice President during the Commonwealth summit.
