A day after her historic election, the newly-appointed Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, took a significant step by visiting the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on Tuesday to seek their endorsement and support.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Meranda explained that her visit was to officially inform the council about the developments in the House of Assembly and to seek their blessings for her leadership. “We came to brief them about what transpired at the House yesterday (Monday) and to obtain their blessings, which we have graciously received,” she stated.
The GAC, established by President Bola Tinubu, is the apex decision-making body of the ruling party in Lagos State. Their backing is seen as crucial for the Speaker to effectively manage the affairs of the Assembly.
The endorsement came during a pivotal meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Meranda was accompanied by key principal officers. The Speaker emphasized the importance of collaboration with the council, adding that their support would ensure a successful tenure.
While the GAC, led by Tajudeen Olusi, declined to issue a formal statement after the meeting, it was confirmed that the closed-door discussion centered around strategies for the smooth operation of the Assembly under Meranda’s leadership.
Interestingly, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had departed Nigeria on Monday night for an official engagement and was not present during the meeting.
Leadership Changes in the Lagos Assembly
Meranda’s rise to the Speakership follows the dramatic impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday. Obasa was accused of misconduct and financial improprieties, leading to his removal by members of the House.
In addition to Obasa’s impeachment, the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was also relieved of his duties, and all standing committees within the Assembly were dissolved. Meranda’s election as Speaker signals a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly.
