Governor Zulum of Borno State announces petrol subsidy at N600 per litre for farmers in insurgency-affected areas, providing relief to over 5,000 displaced farmers.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has introduced a subsidy program to lower the cost of petrol for irrigation farmers in areas impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency. This initiative aims to reduce the financial strain on farmers and support agricultural productivity in affected regions.
In a statement released by Abdulrahman Bundi, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Zulum announced the subsidy during a farm input distribution event held in Bama town. Over 5,000 displaced farmers benefitted from the program.
Governor Zulum revealed that while a litre of petrol currently costs between N1,000 and N1,200 in Maiduguri, it will now be made available to farmers at a reduced price of N600 per litre.
He explained:
“One of the biggest challenges facing farming communities, especially for irrigation farming, is the skyrocketing cost of fuel. To address this, the government will procure petrol and provide it at a subsidized rate of N600 per litre. The Commissioner for Agriculture will collaborate with the Brigade Commander to ensure prompt delivery of the fuel to farmers in Bama.”
Additionally, Zulum distributed essential farm inputs, including:
- 2,000 bags of NPK fertilizer
- 1,000 water pumps
- 620 gasoline pumps
- 380 solar-powered water pumps
- 1,000 sprayers
- 800 rolls of 2-inch flexible hoses
- 1,000 litres of pesticides and seeds
The Governor expressed gratitude to the federal government for its consistent support in rebuilding and resettling insurgency-affected communities.
