Read about the intense clash in Borno State that claimed the lives of 22 soldiers while over 70 insurgents, including three top commanders, were neutralized during Operation Hadin Kai.”
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the loss of 22 soldiers and the elimination of over 70 insurgents in an intense military operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, a well-known terrorist haven in Borno State, Nigeria.
The operation, executed by troops under Operation Hadin Kai, began on January 16, 2025, with a clear objective: to dismantle terrorist enclaves and restore peace to the volatile region.
Key Highlights of the Operation
Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed that the ongoing mission has led to multiple confrontations with insurgents. Among those neutralized were three top terrorist commanders:
- Talha, the Terrorist Special Forces Commander
- Mallam Umar, the Operations Commander
- Abu Yazeed, the Brigade Commander
“The three-pronged operation is targeting the notorious Timbuktu Triangle stronghold,” Buba explained. “The encounters resulted in significant gains, with over 70 terrorists, including key commanders, neutralized.”
Terrorist Tactics and Military Superiority
During the operation, insurgents employed advanced but deadly tactics such as:
- Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)
- Suicide bombers
- Drones
Despite these measures, the troops demonstrated remarkable resilience, thwarting several attacks. According to Buba, “Troops, familiar with terrorist strategies, successfully countered these attempts, including shooting down drones and repelling vehicular suicide bombers.”
Casualties and Media Appeal
While the operation has been largely successful, the military faced significant losses, with 22 soldiers killed and several others injured. Maj. Gen. Buba urged media platforms to exercise restraint in publishing the names of fallen soldiers to ensure families are formally informed first.
“We deeply regret the casualties recorded during the mission and appeal to the media to avoid releasing names prematurely,” he stated.
Conclusion
Operation Hadin Kai remains a testament to the bravery and resilience of Nigerian troops in the fight against terrorism. As the operation continues, the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region remains unwavering.
