President Biden honors 19 recipients, including Bono, Lionel Messi, George Soros, and RFK, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

President Joe Biden has awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 individuals, recognizing their exceptional contributions to society. The recipients range from global icons in entertainment, sports, and fashion to political figures and human rights advocates, emphasizing Biden’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy.

Honoring Remarkable Achievements

The honorees include U2 frontman and activist Bono, soccer legend Lionel Messi, basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and renowned actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox. Biden also recognized fashion industry leaders like Anna Wintour and Ralph Lauren for their extraordinary impact.

Other notable recipients include chef José Andrés, founder of the World Central Kitchen NGO, and Jane Goodall, a pioneering primate researcher and advocate for environmental conservation.

According to a White House statement, “These individuals are exceptional leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.”

Political and Philanthropic Luminaries

Among the honorees are prominent political figures and philanthropists. Billionaire financier George Soros was recognized for his advocacy of democracy, human rights, education, and social justice worldwide. Hillary Clinton, former US secretary of state and the first woman to be nominated by a major party for president, was celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to public service.

Posthumous Recognition for Bobby Kennedy

Biden also posthumously honored Robert F. Kennedy, fondly remembered as “Bobby” or “RFK,” who served as US attorney general during John F. Kennedy’s presidency. RFK’s legacy as a champion of justice and equality continues to inspire, Biden noted. RFK was assassinated in 1968 while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.

A Final Mark Before Leaving Office

The ceremony reflects Biden’s efforts to solidify his legacy before stepping down. In a statement, the president emphasized the significance of these honorees’ contributions to justice, equality, and public service.

On Thursday, Biden also awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman who played a key role in the investigation into the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Cheney’s recognition sparked criticism from former President Donald Trump, who labeled the decision as politically motivated.
