In a tragic incident, four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) lost their lives after being ambushed by Boko Haram insurgents. The attack occurred on November 18, 2024, during an inspection tour of the national grid installations in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, near the boundary with Kaduna State.

Overview of the Incident

According to NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi, the attack involved seven personnel from the Corps’ Special Squad drawn from the national headquarters, FCT, and Kaduna State commands.

  • Four officers were killed, two managed to return safely, and one remains missing.
  • The ambush occurred while the team was escorting stranded expatriates found in the bush around Dagwachi Village after surveillance activities in Shiroro.

Over 200 heavily armed insurgents launched the attack, firing from an elevated position. Despite being outnumbered, the NSCDC operatives repelled the assault, neutralizing over 50 insurgents during the confrontation.

NSCDC’s Response

Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Audi expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and visited the injured personnel to assure them of the Corps’ full support. Key actions taken by the NSCDC leadership include:

  1. Medical Assistance: Full coverage of medical expenses for injured personnel.
  2. Financial Support: Immediate logistical aid to affected officers and their families.
  3. Insurance Benefits: Expedited processing of entitlements for the deceased families.
  4. Recognition of Bravery: Acknowledgement of the exceptional courage shown by the officers in defending national assets.

Dr. Audi emphasized the importance of vigilance and called on the public to support security agencies in their fight against terrorism and insecurity.

Background and Context

The ambush highlights the increasing risks faced by security operatives working to protect Nigeria’s critical infrastructure. Boko Haram insurgents have repeatedly targeted vulnerable regions, leveraging challenging terrains like those in Shiroro and Chukun local government areas.

This incident underscores the need for enhanced security measures, better resources for operatives, and collaborative efforts among security agencies and the public to combat terrorism.

Conclusion

The sacrifices made by the NSCDC personnel in defending the nation’s assets are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by insecurity in Nigeria. Their bravery and commitment to their duty should inspire collective action towards ensuring a safer and more secure country.
