Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, recently opened up about his divorce from Melinda Gates, describing it as the “biggest mistake” of his life. In an interview with The Times, the 69-year-old billionaire shared his personal struggles with the separation and the lessons he has learned in its aftermath.
A Challenging Journey to Acceptance
Bill and Melinda Gates announced their split in May 2021, ending 27 years of marriage. By August of the same year, their divorce was finalized, marking the end of a long chapter filled with shared memories and accomplishments.
Reflecting on the emotional toll of their separation, Gates said, “It was an incredibly difficult time for both of us. However, I feel more cheerful now.” Despite the challenges, he acknowledged the unique bond they shared, adding, “There’s something extraordinary about spending your entire adult life with one person. The shared memories, the depth of what you’ve accomplished together, and having children—it’s all quite special.”
The Foundations of Their Relationship
Bill and Melinda’s story began in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft. Over the years, their partnership extended beyond their personal lives to their professional endeavors, including the co-founding of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Bill credited much of his success to the support he received from Melinda, saying, “When we met, I was already fairly successful, but my career soared during our time together. She stood by me through it all.” He further revealed that he aspired to emulate his parents’ long-lasting 45-year marriage, though he admitted their dynamic was quite different. “I spent more time with the kids than my dad did, but the ratio was still 10:1, with Melinda doing most of the parenting. We had a wonderful time.”
A Turning Point and Life After Divorce
The divorce marked a significant turning point for both Bill and Melinda. Melinda’s decision to step away from the foundation they built together was especially tough for Bill to process. “When we divorced, it was incredibly difficult. Then she chose to step away from the foundation, which I found disheartening,” he revealed.
Describing the split as one of his greatest personal failings, Gates admitted, “It has to be at the top of the list. There are others, but none that compare. The divorce was miserable for both Melinda and me for at least two years.”
Co-Parenting with Grace
Despite their separation, Bill and Melinda have worked to maintain a healthy, amicable relationship. Together, they co-parent their three children—Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe—all of whom are now adults. Their shared commitment to family remains a central pillar in their lives.
Conclusion
While Bill Gates continues to reflect on his regrets and lessons from the past, his story serves as a reminder of the complexities of relationships, the challenges of letting go, and the importance of moving forward with grace and resilience.
