Biafra Group Hopes for International Recognition After Israel Recognizes Somaliland

The Biafran Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has voiced renewed confidence in its pursuit of international recognition, following Israel’s recent formal acknowledgment of Somaliland as an independent state.

The pro-Biafra group described Israel’s decision as a landmark diplomatic achievement for self-determination movements across Africa, signaling a possible path forward for Biafra’s own sovereignty aspirations.

Acting Prime Minister of the Simon Ekpa-backed liberation movement, Nkere Ogechukwu, emphasized in a statement on Tuesday that the development reinforces the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, particularly with the United States government, in achieving recognition for Biafra.

Drawing comparisons with Somaliland’s decades-long struggle for statehood, the BRGIE highlighted the growing international acceptance of new African states. The group expressed optimism that Biafra’s independence ambitions could gain traction on the global stage, especially with strong support from strategic partners like the U.S.

“As more African regions gain recognition, such as Somaliland, we are committed to working closely with the U.S. government to advance the establishment of an independent, pro-U.S. Biafran administration—one that aligns with both American strategic interests and the aspirations of the Biafran people,” the statement read.

Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland: A Historic Milestone

Israel recently became the first United Nations member state to officially recognize Somaliland, a self-declared republic that has operated independently from Somalia since 1991. Despite over 30 years without formal international recognition, Somaliland has successfully maintained its own government, currency, and security systems, while engaging in unofficial high-level diplomacy with select foreign governments.

This recognition is viewed as a significant precedent by groups like BRGIE, which see it as evidence that persistent diplomatic efforts can lead to formal recognition, even after decades of political marginalization.

Strategic Changes in BRGIE’s U.S. Advocacy

In addition to celebrating this diplomatic breakthrough, the BRGIE announced adjustments to its advocacy framework in the United States. Notably, its Washington-based lobbyist, Elias Gerasoulis, has transitioned from Moran Global Strategies to establish Washington & Madison, LLC, a new government relations and international services firm.

The organization confirmed that it has formally retained Washington & Madison to continue lobbying efforts in the U.S., following the conclusion of its partnership with Moran Global Strategies on December 31, 2025. The BRGIE credited Gerasoulis with facilitating important interactions with senior U.S. officials and international stakeholders, particularly regarding allegations of persecution of Biafran communities and Christians in Nigeria.

Additionally, the BRGIE confirmed the renewal of its legal services agreement with Arman Dabiri & Associates, PLLC, which will continue providing international legal counsel. The firm, representing the BRGIE since November 2024, brings extensive expertise in sovereign representation, having worked with countries including Libya, Sudan, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.

Why This Matters

The BRGIE’s optimism is rooted in a clear precedent: international recognition of long-unrecognized states is achievable with strategic diplomacy, consistent advocacy, and strong international legal support. Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has offered both inspiration and a blueprint for Biafra’s leadership to pursue global legitimacy and strengthen international partnerships.
