A devastating accident occurred early Saturday morning along the Benin-Auchi highway, resulting in the deaths of 12 passengers after a Toyota Hiace bus collided with a truck and caught fire.
According to the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, the incident happened around 5 a.m. at Igueoviobo community, close to an army checkpoint.
Deadly Collision Leads to Tragic Loss of Lives
The ill-fated bus, which departed from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was en route to Benin, reportedly veered into the path of an oncoming truck heading toward Auchi.
“All the passengers on the bus perished in the crash,” Mathew confirmed, adding that fatigue might have been a factor, as the driver likely fell asleep behind the wheel, leading to the tragic collision.
Flames Engulf the Bus, No Survivors
Following the impact, the bus was immediately engulfed in flames, leaving no chance for rescue operations. The FRSC commander noted that officials identified the victims through the bus manifest and had already reached out to their families.
While all passengers in the bus lost their lives, the truck driver and his assistant, commonly known as the “motor boy,” managed to escape without injuries.
FRSC Warns Against Driving Fatigue
In response to the incident, Mathew reiterated the importance of avoiding fatigue during long-distance travel. He advised drivers to take breaks and rest when feeling tired to prevent further accidents of this nature.
