Barcelona Explains Why Marc-André ter Stegen Was Stripped of Captaincy

FC Barcelona has officially removed German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from his role as team captain, following recent internal disciplinary actions taken by the club. The announcement was made via a public statement on Thursday by the LaLiga defending champions.

In the statement, the Catalan giants emphasized that the move was directly tied to disciplinary proceedings initiated against Ter Stegen. Although specific details of the incident were not revealed, the club maintained that the decision was in line with internal codes of conduct.

“This decision follows disciplinary proceedings opened against Marc-André ter Stegen,” the statement noted.

As a result of this action, Ronald Araújo, who previously served as the team’s vice-captain, has been promoted to interim captain and will now assume full leadership duties on the pitch.

“During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current vice-captain, Ronald Araújo,” the club clarified.

The decision comes shortly after Ter Stegen announced that he had undergone back surgery in July, an operation that would sideline him for approximately three months. The timing and nature of his surgery reportedly created tension within the club’s leadership. Both club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are said to be dissatisfied with how the matter was handled by the goalkeeper.
