Bandits Strike Merere Community in Zamfara, Abducting Locals

Merere Hausawa, a peaceful community in the Damba district of Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, was once again targeted by armed bandits. The attack occurred on Thursday around 3 p.m., when the gunmen, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, raided the area, moving from house to house and abducting residents.

As reported by a local resident, Usman Muhammad, many of the people who managed to escape found themselves fleeing into the surrounding forest. Others sought refuge in nearby urban areas to avoid capture.

Muhammad expressed deep frustration with the lack of action from security forces, despite the community being known as one of the most vulnerable areas in Gusau. “The security operatives are fully aware that Samba and Merere are the most dangerous regions in Gusau Local Government Area, yet they are unable to confront the bandits,” he lamented.

Despite attempts to reach the State Police Command for an official statement, no response had been received from ASP Yazeed Abubakar, the Police spokesman, at the time of this report.

Why This Matters:

This recent attack highlights the growing insecurity in Zamfara, particularly in Gusau’s rural areas. The ability of bandits to operate with such impunity underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in these communities.
