Badagry Local Government Declares Seven-Day Mourning for Late Akran, Aholu Menu Toyi I

The Badagry Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State has announced a seven-day period of mourning following the passing of the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I. The declaration was officially made by the Chairman of the council, Babatunde Hunpe, on Tuesday, in Badagry, through his Chief Press Secretary, Austin Kriko. The mourning period comes with the approval of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighting the significance of the monarch’s legacy.

In his announcement, Hunpe expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the Akran, stating:

“With the approval of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, I officially announce with profound sorrow the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom.”

The council chairman revealed that the revered traditional ruler passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, after a long and impactful reign that spanned nearly five decades. Hunpe emphasized that the late Akran’s leadership was marked by dedication to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage.

The seven-day mourning period is intended to give residents of Badagry the opportunity to honor the late monarch’s legacy, reflect on his contributions to the local government, and celebrate his service to Lagos State and the nation.

“His Royal Majesty was more than a monarch; he was a living bridge between the past and the future, a revered custodian of tradition, and a moral compass to his people,” Hunpe said. “Akran was a father figure whose wisdom, guidance, and benevolence left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to receive his counsel.”

Condolences were extended to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry LGA and Lagos State, the royal family, and the people of Badagry.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also expressed his sadness over the Akran’s passing, describing it as a monumental loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria. In an official condolence message delivered via his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor highlighted the late monarch’s commitment to cultural preservation and the developmental progress of Badagry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Akran ruled the Badagry kingdom for almost 49 years, leaving behind a legacy of cultural pride, unity, and public service that will be remembered for generations.

The mourning period allows the community to pay tribute to a monarch whose life and reign symbolized stability, heritage, and devotion to the people.
