The Federal Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has revealed that the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State amounted to a total of N43 billion. Additionally, the establishment of the bridge’s state-of-the-art Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) monitoring centre was carried out at a cost of approximately N2.5 billion. Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Monday, Umahi provided detailed insights into the scope of the project. He noted that the rehabilitation covered the bridge’s entire 14-kilometre length, with a width of 14 metres and two carriageways, ensuring that the structure meets modern safety and operational standards. “The rehabilitation project also included rebuilding and repainting certain concrete sections, replacing the expansion joints, and installing solar-powered streetlights along the bridge,” Umahi explained. He clarified that the CCTV centre was part of the overall Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation contract. “The total contract sum for the bridge’s rehabilitation is N43 billion, while the cost of the CCTV monitoring centre is not more than N2.5 billion,” he said, stressing that contrary to reports circulating in some media outlets, the CCTV centre did not cost N40 billion. Umahi, who inaugurated the CCTV facility on Sunday, reflected on the condition of the bridge when the current administration assumed office in 2023. He highlighted the advanced features installed to enhance surveillance and security. “The facility is equipped with a patrol boat for bridge monitoring, two Hilux vans, and 240 solar panels. The centre is fully air-conditioned and houses 10 inverters, a 300KVA transformer, a standby generating plant, and multiple monitoring screens for effective surveillance,” Dare detailed. Bandits have reportedly killed two people and abducted several others during a violent attack on Unguwar Nagunda, a community located in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident occurred on Sunday night when armed assailants stormed the village at the exact moment a wedding convoy was entering the community from Mabai, another settlement within the same local government area. The arrival of the convoy reportedly coincided with the bandits’ invasion, leading to chaos, panic, and loss of lives. Residents were thrown into fear as people attempted to flee for safety while others were caught in the crossfire. Bakatsine disclosed that at least two individuals lost their lives during the attack, while several others sustained gunshot injuries. Among those injured was the bride, who was reportedly part of the wedding convoy targeted by the bandits. In addition to the fatalities and injuries, an unspecified number of wedding guests were abducted by the attackers. Owoyemi, who is also widely recognized by his traditional title Otunba Jadiara, addressed members of the ruling house and stakeholders present at the meeting. He confirmed that all interested princes and princesses had submitted themselves for consideration in line with customary procedures. Several prominent figures within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House were in attendance to witness the process. Among them were the Deputy Olori Ebi, Otunba Ajidagba, the Chairman, Chief Fassy Yusuf, and other respected leaders of the family. During his remarks, Otunba Owoyemi explained that the selection process would proceed in stages. According to him, only candidates who successfully scale the initial screening stage would advance further. The names of those qualified would then be formally submitted to the Afobajes, the traditional kingmakers vested with the authority to choose the next Awujale. He further clarified that the Afobajes would deliberate and eventually select one candidate from the shortlisted names. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has finally addressed the impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the State House of Assembly, shedding light on his earlier remark that dogs bark when they do not understand why they bark. The governor spoke publicly for the first time on the matter on a day his immediate predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, responded to renewed calls demanding his removal from office. Wike stated clearly that the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reserves the right to dismiss him if he believes he no longer has value to offer. At the same time, the Rivers State House of Assembly raised concerns over what it described as covert efforts to illegally obtain court orders aimed at stopping the legislature from exercising its constitutional duties. Why I Said Dogs Are Barking — Fubara Explains Governor Fubara made his remarks during a church service held to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian Anglican Church, Port Harcourt. Addressing worshippers, the governor urged residents of Rivers State to remain calm and assured them that the situation would eventually stabilize. According to him, his decision to stay quiet amid political distractions was intentional and deeply rooted in his faith in God. Wike Dismisses PDP Atiku Loyalists The minister also took a swipe at supporters of the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, stating that they failed to deliver even 10 percent of votes in Rivers State during the last election. According to him, such groups lack the capacity to mobilize support for President Tinubu. “The President knows that we are the real Renewed Hope. We have seen battles before. This is a battle already won.” Alleged Plot to Halt Legislative Proceedings — Rivers Assembly Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly accused unnamed individuals of plotting to illegally secure court injunctions to prevent the legislature from carrying out its constitutional functions. In a statement signed by Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, the Assembly revealed that intelligence reports suggested attempts to obtain court orders from high courts outside the Port Harcourt judicial division. The lawmakers noted that those allegedly involved were aware of constitutional provisions governing legislative processes and judicial jurisdiction. The Assembly cited Section 272(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines jurisdiction on matters relating to the tenure of governors and legislators, as well as Section 188(10), which explicitly bars courts from entertaining proceedings related to impeachment processes.
