The term “record” in our opening verse also means testimony. The New International Version and a few other versions put it more clearly: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (1 John 5:11 NIV). To get a better understanding of what John was discussing here, you’ll have to read the ninth and tenth verses as well. Let’s read: “We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son” (1 John 5:9-10 NIV). God’s testimony is that you have eternal life because you have Jesus Christ. You don’t have to feel it to know you have it. All you need is God’s testimony that you already have it. If you don’t accept His testimony, then you make Him a liar, and God cannot lie. That testimony also says anyone who doesn’t have the Son of God doesn’t have life. The 13th verse in the New International Version is so beautiful. There, the apostle John says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” Glory to God! If you believe in the Name of the Son of God, this was written to you so you can accept God’s testimony, and that testimony is that you have eternal life.
