Anti-Corruption War Must Start from the Top, Says Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has reiterated that for Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts to succeed, the battle must start with accountability at the highest levels of leadership. Speaking during a virtual interactive session titled “Boiling Point Arena” on Sunday night, Obasanjo highlighted the critical need for transparency among top government officials to inspire a culture of integrity throughout the nation. The session, which was broadcast on private radio stations in Abeokuta, Ogun State, explored Obasanjo’s legacies in government and his perspective on Nigeria’s current state. Corruption: A Hydra-Headed Monster Obasanjo described corruption as a pervasive issue that has deeply infiltrated Nigeria’s social and political fabric. He likened it to a “babariga” (a traditional flowing garment), explaining that corruption’s complexity makes it difficult to tackle without a holistic and consistent approach. “The best way of fighting corruption is starting from the head. That is where corruption has to be fought from,” Obasanjo asserted. He emphasized that the fight against corruption must be a continuous effort, spanning multiple regimes, and should not be treated as a short-term goal. “Corruption is very hydra-headed and eats deep. It’s not a one-day affair, nor a one-regime affair. It has to be consistent, continual, and tackled daily. Once one regime fails to act, corruption spreads even further.” The Role of Leadership in Combating Corruption Obasanjo stressed the importance of recruiting leaders based on merit rather than political or tribal affiliations. He argued that leadership selection must prioritize competence and integrity to ensure effective governance. “Political appointments must be based on merit. Leaders enthroned by God have a higher chance of succeeding than those who impose themselves or are appointed for ulterior motives,” he said. He further clarified that not all leaders are divinely chosen, noting that some leaders emerge through selfish or even malevolent motives, which often leads to failure. Citing the Biblical story of Job, he explained how leadership can also be influenced by negative forces. “While many say all leaders are made by God, I don’t believe that. A leader can also be made by Satan. Leaders placed by God are more likely to succeed than those who impose themselves or are appointed by corrupt systems.” Call for Systemic Change Obasanjo concluded by calling for systemic reforms in leadership recruitment and governance practices. He urged Nigerians to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders, stating that a culture of integrity must be cultivated at the top for it to permeate all levels of society. This session underlined Obasanjo’s enduring belief in the transformative power of good leadership and his unwavering call for a transparent, merit-based governance system to combat corruption effectively. Tinubu’s Foreign Policy: A Strategic Gamble or Calculated Move?

Introduction The recent protests in Nigeria, marked by the display of Russian flags, have sparked debates on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign policy approach, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Critics suggest Tinubu’s strategies might have fostered pro-Russian sentiments domestically. However, this claim needs a nuanced understanding of Nigeria’s historical and current diplomatic framework. ECOWAS and Nigeria’s Foreign Policy Foundations Contrary to popular belief, Tinubu’s foreign policy is not a significant departure from Nigeria’s historical stance. Since ECOWAS was established in 1975, Nigeria’s foreign policy has emphasized African unity, anti-apartheid efforts, and the equitable use of the continent’s resources. These principles were shaped by leaders like Dr. Jaja Wachukwu and Dr. Okoi Arikpo. Tinubu’s predecessors also positioned Nigeria as the “Giant of Africa,” enforcing justice across the continent. Tinubu’s actions align with this legacy rather than represent a unique gamble. Tinubu’s Dual Role: President and ECOWAS Chair Distinguishing Tinubu’s role as Nigeria’s President from his responsibilities as ECOWAS Chair adds complexity. For instance: The Rise of Pro-Russian Sentiments in Nigeria The emergence of pro-Russian sentiments in Nigeria is tied more to ECOWAS’ actions than directly to Tinubu’s policies. The seven-day ultimatum issued to Niger following the coup heightened tensions. Although this ultimatum originated from ECOWAS, its implementation by Nigeria intensified public backlash. Challenges to ECOWAS’ Military Intervention Despite ECOWAS’ authorization of military action against Niger’s junta in August 2023, several factors hindered its execution: Resolution and Aftermath International and domestic pressure led ECOWAS to de-escalate military plans. Following lifted sanctions and changing circumstances, legal cases against the intervention were discontinued. This episode reflects the balancing act Tinubu faced between regional leadership and domestic accountability. Conclusion Labeling Tinubu’s foreign policy as a gamble oversimplifies the complexities of his dual roles and the historical context of Nigeria’s diplomacy. While pro-Russian sentiments and criticisms of ECOWAS decisions have emerged, they underscore the intricate dynamics of governance and regional cooperation. Tinubu’s actions reflect continuity in Nigeria’s foreign policy rather than a stark deviation. Rhapsody of Realities 9th December 2024. HE CLEANSES YOU FROM ALL SINS

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14). Our opening verse says in Christ Jesus we have redemption (riddance) through His blood, and then in the concluding part, it says, “…even the forgiveness of sins.” That word “even” is in parenthesis, which means it wasn’t in the original text. The translators inserted it by their own prerogative, but it was wrongly applied. The correct conjunction is the word “and”: “In whom we have redemption through his blood, and the forgiveness of sins.” To say “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins” suggests that “we have redemption of sins through His blood, meaning the forgiveness of sins.” But that’s not true, because they are two different things: first, in Christ Jesus, we have our riddance or redemption, and secondly, we have our freedom from sins (forgiveness). We’re free from sins. That means you don’t have to sin. You don’t have to keep watching to be sure that you don’t sin; rather, just keep walking in righteousness; keep walking in the light in His Word—His Word is light (Psalm 119:105). 1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” This happens automatically. As you walk in the light of God’s Word, and in fellowship with other Christians, He automatically cleanses you from all sins. Sin is everywhere because man’s world has been polluted. But the Lord cleanses you from all sins, including sins you didn’t necessarily commit but rubbed off on you. This was the reason they had all kinds of ceremonial “washings” in the Old Testament. If they wanted to go into the presence of God, they’d wash their hands and their feet; they had to wash all the time. But it’s not so today: the blood of Jesus Christ Himself cleanses us from all sin automatically. He takes care of any sin, whether from someone else, from the environment, etc., so that you can keep walking your way through life in victory, from glory to glory. Hallelujah! Then in John 15:3, He says, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” It’s the ministry of the Word to cleanse you of sin, guilt, and all unrighteousness so you can walk in perfection and excellence, producing works and fruits of righteousness. PRAYERDear Father, I thank you for my new life in Christ, a life of righteousness with freedom from sin. Thank you for the continuous cleansing that comes from walking in the light of your Word. I walk in perfection and excellence, producing works and fruits of righteousness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. FURTHER STUDY:|| 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. || || Romans 3:24-26 NIVand all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. || || Acts 13:38-39Be it known unto you therefore, men [and] brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. || READ ALSO: Daily Affirmations: My heart is full of God’s love, kindness and compassion; and I express these lavishly everywhere and to everyone. Businessman Seeks N150 Million Compensation Over EFCC Raid

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, is under scrutiny following allegations that his personnel unlawfully raided the home of Ugochukwu Ezeanyagu, an economist and contractor based in Abia. In a petition filed through his legal representatives, Equity Law Partners, Ezeanyagu details a harrowing experience that occurred around 2 a.m. on December 6, 2024. He claims that approximately 15 EFCC agents, some masked and armed with AK-47 rifles, broke into his residence, assaulting him and his eight-month-pregnant wife. The officials accused Ezeanyagu of internet fraud but later apologized after failing to find any evidence of wrongdoing. During the raid, the EFCC agents allegedly questioned whether Ezeanyagu owned a Mercer SUV and a Toyota Corolla parked on his property. Before leaving, they reportedly stole bottles of wine from his refrigerator and slapped his security guard. Ezeanyagu has described the incident as criminal trespass, unlawful invasion of privacy, criminal intimidation, assault, and theft. He is now seeking N150 million in compensation for the emotional distress and trauma inflicted on him and his family. He also demands a public apology from the EFCC officers involved in the raid. According to his petition, both Ezeanyagu and his wife have been severely affected by the traumatic event, enduring psychological distress. “Every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity and respect for their constitutionally guaranteed rights,” the petition states. “The EFCC’s conduct, particularly the late-night raid, raises serious concerns and warrants a thorough investigation.” Ezeanyagu’s lawyers emphasize that his privacy was violated, and he and his wife were subjected to intimidation, physical assault, and humiliation. The EFCC agents reportedly acted without a search warrant, making their actions illegal. Their failure to find any incriminating evidence further highlights the unjust nature of the raid, which they liken to a criminal act of theft and assault. The petition concludes by stressing the need for accountability and the importance of maintaining the integrity of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria, especially those as prominent as the EFCC.
