So, we don’t say, “Lord Jesus, please talk to the Father for me.” No; the Father Himself loves us, so we talk to Him directly. I’ve always pointed out the difference between praying to God through Jesus Christ and praying to God in the Name of Jesus. They’re not the same. Praying to God in the Name of Jesus is what Jesus told us to do. Praying to God through Jesus Christ is making Jesus a medium, and after you’re born again, He’s not a medium to you. He’s a medium to God only for the sinner. Remember what He said: “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). But when you come by Him to the Father, you don’t need a medium anymore because you’re now in the presence of the Father. Praying in the Name of Jesus is a matter of authority. Organised Labour has firmly opposed the outright sale of public refineries like the Port Harcourt Refinery to the private sector. After a recent inspection, Labour leaders emphasized their preference for a privatization model that ensures the private sector holds a controlling stake while government, workers, and host communities maintain minority shares. Labour’s Stance on Refinery Privatization The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), alongside the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), have endorsed the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) model as the ideal framework for refinery privatization. What is the NLNG Model? The NLNG model is structured with the private sector owning a 51% majority stake, while the federal government retains 49%. This approach has proven effective in fostering collaboration and satisfaction among all stakeholders. NUPENG President’s RemarksPrince Williams Akporeha, President of NUPENG, stated that the visit to the Port Harcourt Refinery strengthened their position against outright privatization. Governors Show Support for State PoliceThe push for state-controlled policing gained momentum as all 36 Nigerian states submitted their positions, with the majority supporting the initiative. Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, disclosed this after the 147th National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. According to Governor Sani, most states agreed on the need for state police to address widespread security challenges, such as ungoverned spaces and a shortage of security personnel. He stated, “Establishing state police in Nigeria is the way forward for addressing the problem of insecurity in our country.” NEC Defers Final Decision Until JanuaryWhile consensus appears strong, NEC deferred final discussions until January to allow for the presentation of a detailed report by the NEC secretariat. The Council also plans further stakeholder engagement to refine the framework for state police. Governor Sani explained, “The Council decided to step down the discussion until the next meeting. After the report, deliberations will take place in January.” The deferment follows a resolution from NEC’s 146th meeting on November 21, which mandated the remaining states—Adamawa, Kebbi, and Kwara—and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to submit their positions within a week. The Road to State Police CreationTalks on establishing state police began in February 2024 during a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors. These discussions were driven by growing insecurity, rising food prices, and economic hardship across the country. The Federal Government and state authorities are now considering constitutional amendments to empower states to create and manage their police forces. In March, 16 states submitted reports detailing their plans, while the remaining 20 states completed submissions by May. Despite progress, the implementation of state police remains in the planning stages. The Bayelsa State Governor emphasized the need to address bureaucratic delays, saying, “The timeline given for submissions was short, and efforts are underway to hasten the process.” Support and OppositionAdvocates for state police argue that decentralizing the Nigerian Police Force will enhance community-focused law enforcement and improve security across regions. Proponents believe this model can address localized security issues more effectively. However, critics warn that state police could lead to the abuse of power, particularly in politically controlled states, and risk undermining national unity by intensifying regional tensions. In a shocking incident in Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, unidentified gunmen unleashed terror on Wednesday evening, leaving four people dead and one abducted. The attack created panic throughout the community, forcing residents to flee while traders hastily shut their shops. Eyewitnesses recounted that the gunmen targeted popular spots such as Book Foundation Junction, Ukwu Aki Bus Stop, “B” Bus Stop, Commissioners’ Quarters, and the Bamboo area of the city. During the rampage, the manager of a renowned hotel in Awka was abducted. His whereabouts remain unknown at the time of this report. A local trader who spoke anonymously described the ordeal: “Around 7 pm, the gunshots started suddenly. Three people were killed at Book Foundation Junction, and another at Ukwu Aki Bus Stop. The attackers also stormed a hotel at Commissioners’ Quarters, kidnapping the manager. We’ve heard that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦20 million but later reduced it to ₦12 million as ransom.” The violence caused widespread fear, with businesses remaining closed even the following day. Another resident, identified as Chibuike, added: “They killed three at Ifite last night and another at ‘B’ Bus Stop. This morning, someone was also shot near the Ukwu Aki area. December is becoming frighteningly bloody.” Despite the gravity of the situation, hotel staff declined to provide further comments. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police were unaware of the incident but urged relatives of victims to contact law enforcement.
