Such folks are ignorant because the Bible tells us that Satan and demons are real. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “…your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Jesus taught about demons and how they operate, and He cast out demons on several occasions. In fact, the very first sign He said would follow those who believe in Him is what we read in our opening scripture: the ability to cast out demons. Once, He was teaching in the synagogue and the Bible tells us that a certain woman who was bent double and couldn’t straighten up herself came into the synagogue. The Bible says, “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity” (Luke 13:12). In the 11th and 16th verses, it’s clearly stated that the woman’s condition was caused by the devil, and Jesus proved it when He touched her and commanded her to straighten up, and she was restored instantly. There were also instances where He commanded deaf spirits to come out of people who were deaf and dumb, and they instantly began to hear and speak. Many of us have done the same thing over the years in His Name. We’ve cast out deaf and dumb spirits, and instantly, the people who were afflicted started to hear and to speak. We did exactly what Jesus said to do and what He did. Glory to God! He told us to cast out demons because they are real and are responsible for many of the troubles and infirmities that people suffer with and that we see around us. So, don’t be deceived by Satan’s incognito; if he can get you to believe he doesn’t exist, then he can mess up your life and mess up things around you. Violence against women and girls is an undeniable violation of human rights. No cultural norm, tradition, or economic pressure can ever justify the immense suffering endured by millions of women worldwide. It is our collective responsibility to challenge these harmful narratives and promote equality. Globally, gender inequality and violence against women are persistent barriers to sustainable development. According to UN Women, nearly one in three women—approximately 736 million—have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, non-partner, or both at some point in their lives. This figure does not even include cases of sexual harassment. Gender-based violence manifests in various forms—physical, emotional, sexual, and economic—affecting women in all corners of the world, including Nigeria. From intimate partner violence to harmful practices like female genital mutilation, trafficking, exploitation, and sexual harassment, these acts stem from deeply entrenched societal inequalities. Studies show that women who face violence are more likely to develop depression, anxiety disorders, and other long-lasting health complications. According to the United Nations, in 2023 alone, over 51,100 women were murdered by intimate partners or family members—a sobering statistic highlighting the deadly nature of gender-based violence. Violence in Nigeria: A Daily Reality In Nigeria, violence against women is widespread, yet much of it goes unreported. The 2018 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey revealed that 9% of women aged 15 to 49 had experienced sexual violence, while 31% had faced physical violence. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the issue, increasing the vulnerability of women and girls to violence. Global Advocacy: The 16 Days of Activism The “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,” observed annually from November 25 to December 10, shines a light on this critical issue. This period serves as a global platform to raise awareness, mobilize action, and advocate for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. This year’s theme, “No Excuse. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women,” is a rallying cry for collective action. As emphasized by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the theme underscores the need to support survivors and stand with activists working tirelessly to bring change. A Shared Responsibility Eliminating violence requires a united effort. Governments, civil society organizations, private sector actors, and individuals must collaborate to tackle the root causes of violence. Harmful stereotypes, discriminatory norms, and cultural practices that perpetuate abuse must be confronted and dismantled. Additionally, survivors must have access to comprehensive support services, including healthcare, legal aid, and counseling. It is crucial to create safe spaces where survivors can share their experiences without fear of stigma or retaliation. A Future Without Fear As Nigeria joins the global community in observing the 16 Days of Activism, we must reflect on both the progress made and the challenges ahead. Every woman and girl deserves to live free from violence, fear, and discrimination. This is not merely an ideal—it is a necessity. In a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Kano/Jigawa Command, in partnership with the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), seized 2,179kg of pangolin scales and arrested one suspect in Mubi, Adamawa State. This marks a significant step in their ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and protect Nigeria’s biodiversity. The operation, announced on Tuesday by Kano/Jigawa Customs Spokesman Saidu Nuruddeen, was conducted with the support of FOU Zone D and highlights the successful collaboration between the NCS and WJC. This seizure is the third major operation carried out by the two organizations this year. Consistent Commitment to Wildlife Protection Nuruddeen emphasized the NCS’s dedication to fighting organized crime and wildlife trafficking, noting that the agency operates under the leadership of Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. Since partnering with WJC in 2021, the collaboration has resulted in multiple arrests and seizures across the country. He revealed that a total of 21,582kg of pangolin scales have been confiscated in Nigeria through these combined efforts. In 2024 alone, 54% of this amount—11,673.2kg—has been seized, with the Kano/Jigawa Command accounting for 4,473.2kg. Prosecution of Offenders The suspect linked to this recent seizure will be prosecuted as part of the agency’s commitment to dismantling wildlife trafficking networks. Nuruddeen reassured the public that the NCS will leave no stone unturned in its mission to identify and apprehend others connected to this illegal trade. “This operation demonstrates the power of collaboration between NCS and WJC and reaffirms our commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity,” Nuruddeen stated. In a significant breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a multi-million dollar Christmas drug haul, successfully thwarting an attempt to smuggle methamphetamine and Loud cannabis from Canada into Nigeria. The Operation Authorities cracked down on two international drug syndicates responsible for concealing drugs in car parts and shipping them to Nigeria. Six suspects were arrested in connection with the case. The smuggled substances—methamphetamine, cocaine, and Loud (a high-grade cannabis strain)—were reportedly intended for distribution during the festive season. Law enforcement agencies from three continents collaborated to track the shipment, which traveled from Canada to Nigeria via Belgium. Upon arrival in Lagos, officials uncovered substantial quantities of drugs: Another major seizure in Rivers State resulted in authorities confiscating 636,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup based on intelligence reports. International Drug Networks Targeted This recent bust follows earlier disruptions in November, where authorities dismantled a syndicate smuggling 845 wraps of cocaine (18.72 kg) into Lagos from Brazil via Ethiopia. The NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign continues to play a pivotal role, raising awareness in schools, workplaces, religious centers, and local communities across Nigeria. A devastating accident occurred on Tuesday when an unidentified pedestrian was fatally crushed by a truck at the Iyana-Ishasi U-turn, heading towards Mile 2 in Lagos State. This incident follows closely on the heels of a similar tragedy less than 24 hours earlier at Ilubirin, near Sura, on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge. The accident happened around 11 a.m., involving a fully loaded Howo tipper truck with no visible registration number. The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reported that the accident resulted from a severe brake failure, which caused the truck to lose control while speeding through traffic. “The out-of-control truck tragically veered off course and struck a pedestrian walking along the roadside, leading to an instant fatality,” Bakare-Oki explained. He praised the swift response of LASTMA and FRSC officials, who successfully managed the situation. Officers from the Ishasi Police Division also provided security to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the rescue operation. While extending condolences to the victim’s family, Bakare-Oki urged motorists to prioritize road safety and strictly adhere to traffic rules to avoid such preventable tragedies.
