Trevor Noah’s Grammy Remarks Spark Debate as He Takes a Swipe at Trump Trevor Noah’s Bold Statements at the 2025 Grammy Awards South African comedian Trevor Noah returned to host the 2025 Grammy Awards for the fifth consecutive time, bringing his signature wit and political humor to the stage. This year, however, his jokes took a sharper tone, especially toward former U.S. President Donald Trump and his policies. Opening Monologue: A Mix of Music and Politics Kicking off the night, Noah acknowledged some of music’s biggest names, such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna, while subtly addressing the political landscape in Washington. He also poked fun at the Grammy voting process, which involves 13,000 members of the Recording Academy, sarcastically suggesting that “20 million illegal immigrants” had taken part in the vote. A Controversial Comment on His Future as a Host As the night progressed, Noah made another politically charged remark, stating: “There’s been a few changes in Washington. So I’m gonna enjoy tonight because this may be the last time I get to host anything in this country.” His statement came shortly after a series of ICE raids under Trump’s controversial immigration policy, which resulted in 1,179 arrests across major U.S. cities. Artists Speak Out on Social Issues Several artists used their Grammy acceptance speeches to address ongoing social and political issues, advocating for marginalized communities. Alicia Keys Defends Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) While accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Alicia Keys voiced her disapproval of the Trump administration’s decision to eliminate DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) departments. She declared: “DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift. The more voices we have, the more powerful the sound. When destructive forces try to burn us down, we rise from the ashes like a phoenix.” She further emphasized the importance of representation in the entertainment industry: “This is not the time to silence the diversity of voices we’ve seen on this stage—talented, hard-working people from different backgrounds, with different perspectives. And that changes the game.” Chapell Roan’s Support for the Trans Community Newcomer Chapell Roan, who won Best New Artist, took the opportunity to address the struggles of the transgender community in her red carpet interview with GLAAD. She expressed concern over the challenges trans individuals face, saying: “It’s brutal right now. Trans people have always existed and will forever exist. No matter what happens, they will never take trans joy away. That must be protected more than anything because I wouldn’t be here without trans girls.” She also reassured transgender Americans, saying: “Pop music is thinking about you and cares about you. I’m doing my best to stand up for you in every way I can.” Lady Gaga’s Message of Love for the LGBTQ+ Community Pop icon Lady Gaga also used her stage time to uplift the trans and LGBTQ+ communities, stating: “I just want to say tonight that trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love.” Conclusion: A Grammy Night of Music and Activism The 2025 Grammy Awards were more than just a celebration of music; they became a platform for artists to speak on critical social and political issues. While Trevor Noah’s politically charged humor sparked debates, artists like Alicia Keys, Chapell Roan, and Lady Gaga reinforced the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equal rights. As the music industry continues to evolve, the Grammy stage remains a powerful space for artists to advocate for change—one speech at a time. JAMB Suspends Two CBT Centres Over Security Breaches in 2025 UTME The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has placed a 14-day suspension on two Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres for violating security protocols during the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration. The affected centres are: The suspension, which takes effect from Tuesday, February 4, 2025, was announced in a statement by JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin. Reason for the Suspension According to JAMB, the decision to suspend the centres follows a major procedural violation that compromised the board’s security measures. These measures are in place to prevent irregularities and ensure that all data submitted during registration remains verifiable and secure. JAMB emphasized that all candidates must manually enter their details before uploading them to the registration portal. The completed template must also be uploaded as proof of the candidate’s registration details. However, some centres failed to comply with this guideline by submitting blank registration templates. This practice, according to JAMB, was an attempt to increase candidate submissions dishonestly. Warning to Other CBT Centres JAMB has issued a stern warning to all CBT centres, stressing that any future occurrences of uploading blank registration templates will result in outright cancellation of the centre’s accreditation. Such centres will be permanently barred from participating in JAMB-related activities. Key Dates for 2025 UTME Registration JAMB urges all CBT centres to strictly adhere to registration guidelines, ensuring that all candidate details are clearly and accurately recorded before submission. Conclusion The suspension of these two centres serves as a cautionary measure to maintain the credibility of the 2025 UTME registration process. As JAMB continues to enforce strict compliance, all candidates and CBT centres are advised to follow the approved procedures to avoid disruptions. Enugu Inland Revenue Service Gains Autonomy Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has signed into law a bill aimed at simplifying tax collection and administration by creating a one-stop taxation system. The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025 grants autonomy to the revenue collection agency, eliminating bureaucratic hurdles and preventing multiple taxation. During the signing ceremony at the Government House in Enugu, Mbah emphasized the significance of this reform in improving the Ease of Doing Business and positioning Enugu as a top investment hub. Eliminating Multiple Taxation for Businesses Mbah acknowledged the frequent complaints from the business community, private sector, and market traders regarding multiple taxation. He reassured them that with the new law in place, tax payments would be centralized. “From today, all tax payments—whether for market traders, private businesses, or government agencies—will be made at a single revenue collection point. This ensures transparency and prevents unauthorized tax collection,” Mbah stated. This reform aligns with global best practices by streamlining tax payments, making compliance easier for businesses and individuals. How the New Taxation Law works The new legislation consolidates state and local government revenues, ensuring that each tier of government receives its due share. Similar to Land Use Charges and Value Added Tax (VAT), tax collection will be centralized, but the revenue will be distributed accordingly. “The idea is simple: one collection point, with appropriate revenue allocation to the relevant government bodies. This enhances transparency and accountability in revenue management,” the governor explained. Autonomy for the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service Under the new law, the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service (EIRS) now operates as an independent agency, allowing it to function with greater efficiency. IGR Growth Driven by Technology, Not Higher Taxes Governor Mbah also addressed misconceptions regarding the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He clarified that the surge in revenue is a result of expanding the tax net, plugging revenue leakages, and leveraging technology—rather than increasing tax rates. “We have not raised taxes in Enugu State. Instead, we have improved revenue collection efficiency, ensuring that payments are properly documented and remitted to state accounts,” he assured. Conclusion The establishment of a one-stop tax collection system marks a transformative step in Enugu’s economic strategy. By streamlining tax administration, eliminating multiple taxation, and granting EIRS autonomy, the state is fostering a business-friendly environment that will attract more investors and drive sustainable growth. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10). The word “salvation” is a unique word that’s oftenonly used by those who believe in Jesus Christ. While many may have a general idea of what it means, only a few have explored the Scriptures to grasp its true meaning and implications. Salvation, simply, means to deliver, to make whole, and to preserve. That’s what Jesus brought to us. He “saved” us, andthe term ‘saved’ originates from the Greek word “sozo,”which embodies the full scope of what Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection achieved for mankind. So when we say that Jesus brought salvation, it means He brought deliverance, completeness and preservation. Thus, when you say you’re saved by Jesus Christ, it means He delivered you, made you complete, and preserved you. You’ve been delivered from the power of darkness, from sin, from fear, from death and Satan’s dominion, into God’s perfect will. Colossians 1:12-14 says, _*“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”*_ Having been delivered, He brings you into that state of completeness, protecting you, and stopping anything or anyone from affecting the wholeness He has givenyou. Now that you’re born again, you’re whole, sound and exactly as He intended in His perfect will. Nothing is left out in your life. You’re perfected in Him. Hallelujah! This is why the understanding of the full message of salvation is important. Paul explained in his letter to the Roman Church, _*“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”*_ (Romans 10:8-10). This is what we preach; that in Christ Jesus, you’ve been delivered, made whole and preserved. Blessed be God! *PRAYER* *Dear Father, I thank you for the gift of salvation that I have received in Christ Jesus. I’m delivered, complete in Christ, and preserved in the state of wholeness and victory. My life is a testimony of your saving power, and I walk in your perfect will, and in the full blessings of the Gospel of Christ, in Jesus’ Name. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins (Luke 1:77). In Luke 1:76-77, we see a powerful revelation about salvation. It says, _*“And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins.”*_ The first thing about salvation is remission or the removal of sin. This is so important because without this understanding, many live a life that doesn’t reflect the true change salvation brings. In Acts 3:25-26, the Apostle Peter addressed the Jewish congregation, reminding them of God’s promise to their ancestors. He declared that they were the children of the prophets and of the covenant made with their forefathers. Peter explained, _*”Unto you first God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities”*_ (Acts 3:26). This verse reveals another crucial aspect of salvation: the blessing to be turned away from sin. God blessed us by sending Jesus to turn us away from our iniquities. You couldn’t do it by yourself. You might have struggled with sin, but when you received salvation, you received power over sin. In Luke 24:46-47, Jesus made it clear that repentance and the remission of sins should be preached in His Name among all nations, starting from Jerusalem: _*“…Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”*_ Now you can understand why Paul cried out in Acts 13:38-39, _*“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”*_ This is a truth that many people need to understand. Sin is no longer a factor; its power to lord it over you has been removed. In Christ, you’ve been made sin-free. It helps you further understand why the Bible says in Romans 6:14, _*“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”*_ Hallelujah! *PRAYER* *Dear Father, I walk in the liberty of your grace, knowing that sin has no dominion over me. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, I have been made righteous, justified, and sanctified. I live in the consciousness of this victory, free from guilt, walking in the fullness of the blessings of salvation, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.* *FURTHER STUDY* *||* *Colossians 1:13-14* Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: *||* *||* *Romans 3:21-25* But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; *||* *||* *Romans 6:6-7* Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. *||* READ ALSO: DAILY AFFIRMATIONS: I am a new creation, born with the life and nature of God. 20 Lagos West Lawmakers Secure Meranda’s Speakership Amidst Political Tensions The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) convened an emergency meeting on Monday with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to address the ongoing leadership dispute. The crisis erupted after former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed in absentia on January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 40 Assembly members. The lawmakers accused him of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and authoritarian leadership. Following his removal, his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was elected as the new Speaker—a decision that sparked mixed reactions among APC leaders, party supporters, and the public. Deepening Divisions Within the GAC The leadership transition further widened rifts within the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). The high-stakes meeting, which started at noon at Lagos House, Marina, was chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, leader of the GAC and a top decision-maker within the Lagos APC. This was the second such meeting within two weeks, as the GAC sought to resolve the internal crisis surrounding the state Assembly’s leadership. Lagos West Lawmakers Rally Behind Meranda Despite resistance, a significant number of lawmakers and APC leaders expressed strong support for Meranda’s continued leadership. The discussion revolved around ensuring regional balance in the Assembly’s leadership structure. With both Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Meranda hailing from Lagos Central, some GAC members argued that the Speakership should be shifted to Lagos West. However, this suggestion did not gain sufficient backing. In a decisive move, about 20 lawmakers from Lagos West united in their support for Meranda, outrightly rejecting any proposal to replace her. Their firm stance effectively solidified her position as Speaker, despite efforts from political heavyweights loyal to the Tinubu political family to reinstate Obasa. Victory for Meranda Amidst Power Struggles Despite mounting political pressure, Meranda successfully retained her Speakership, leading to celebrations among Assembly members and staff. A source disclosed that “efforts to unseat Meranda did not succeed, as discussions mainly centered around regional leadership balance.” With the crisis seemingly settled, Meranda’s leadership now appears more stable, backed by a strong coalition within the Lagos State Assembly. Enugu demonstrates transparency, accountability, and traceability—values that Denmark strongly upholds,” she remarked. She expressed admiration for several of Enugu’s development initiatives, including: “We are eager to determine how Denmark can contribute to these efforts,” Djerrum added, highlighting the presence of Danish companies in the state, including a tractor supply and assembly facility. Denmark also hopes to support renewable energy, waste management, and capacity building, with agriculture identified as a priority sector for collaboration. Governor Mbah’s Vision for Economic Growth Governor Peter Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Enugu a top investment destination. He emphasized the state’s goal of expanding its economy sevenfold to $30 billion within six years. Enugu has already secured partnerships with Danish firms, including an agreement with ODK Group to supply tractors and establish an assembly plant. Further investments in agriculture include: “Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, contributing 40% to our GDP. We are creating a business-friendly environment that minimizes investment risks,” Mbah stated. Additionally, Enugu has secured $20 million for livestock investment and is developing a ranch capable of accommodating over 20,000 cows. Beyond agriculture, the governor highlighted investment potential in tourism, healthcare, logistics, and aviation. Conclusion Denmark’s growing interest in Enugu presents exciting opportunities for investment and collaboration. With shared values and strategic partnerships, Enugu is positioning itself as a hub for sustainable economic growth and innovation. Boosting Local Refining and Strengthening Energy Security The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially banned the export of crude oil allocated for domestic refineries. This move aims to enhance the country’s refining capacity, minimize reliance on imported petroleum products, and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Previously, about 500,000 barrels per day meant for local refining were illegally sold on the international market, as producers and traders exploited the system for quick foreign exchange earnings. To curb this practice, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has announced that it will no longer issue export permits for crude oil designated for domestic refineries. Strict Regulatory Measures to Ensure Compliance The commission emphasized that any alterations to cargoes designated for local refining require explicit approval from the Chief Executive Officer of NUPRC. In a February 2, 2025, directive, addressed to oil producers and exploration companies, NUPRC CEO, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, reiterated that diverting crude meant for Nigerian refineries violates the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021. During a recent meeting with over 50 key industry stakeholders, including refiners and producers, both sides blamed each other for inconsistencies in implementing the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation (DCSO) policy. Refiners claimed that producers prioritized foreign markets over local supply, while producers argued that refiners failed to meet commercial and operational agreements, forcing them to seek alternative buyers. The regulator, however, has introduced new measures to enforce compliance, warning both parties against further violations. Producers must adhere strictly to the DCSO policy and obtain approval before diverting any crude oil originally intended for local use. Legal Framework and Enforcement Actions Under Section 109 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, the government aims to ensure a stable supply of crude oil to domestic refineries while reinforcing Nigeria’s energy security. To enforce this regulation, NUPRC has implemented the following: This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Naira-for-Crude programme, which ensures that refineries purchase crude oil in naira and sell refined petroleum products in local currency. Domestic Refining Demand Reaches 770,500 Barrels Per Day According to NUPRC’s latest report, Nigeria’s major refineries require a total of 770,500 barrels per day (bpd) in the first half of 2025. These include: This 770,500 bpd allocation represents 37% of the forecasted first-half 2025 daily crude production of 2.07 million barrels. International Oil Companies (IOCs) and independent producers, including Shell, Chevron, and Seplat Energy, will supply the required crude. NUPRC’s Project One Million Barrels, launched in October 2024, has significantly boosted the country’s crude production, ensuring enough supply for both domestic use and exports. Nigeria’s Oil Production Sees a 7.38% Increase Nigeria’s daily average oil production rose by 7.38% year-on-year in December 2024, reaching 1.667 million barrels per day (mbpd) from 1.552 mbpd in December 2023. However, the December 2024 output dropped 1.35% month-on-month, from 1.69 mbpd in November 2024 to 1.667 mbpd. Data from NUPRC showed that in December 2024, the highest crude oil production was recorded at: Despite these improvements, Nigeria still failed to meet its 1.7 mbpd benchmark for the 2024 national budget and OPEC’s 1.5 mbpd quota. NNPCL Backs Domestic Refining Policy Reacting to the crude allocation policy, NNPC Limited’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Femi Soneye, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing domestic refining capacity and reducing fuel imports. Under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, oil producers are required to prioritize domestic crude supply before exporting the excess. These measures are designed to: Experts Applaud Move, Call for Effective Implementation Experts have welcomed the ban, urging the government to ensure effective enforcement. Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), described it as a bold step that could positively impact the economy. He emphasized the need for strong political will to enforce the directive and prevent sabotage. He also noted that sourcing crude oil domestically will: Similarly, Prof. Wumi Iledare, an expert in Petroleum Economics, and Dr. Bala Zakka, an energy analyst, praised the policy as long overdue. However, they urged the government to ensure that local refineries operate at full capacity and are not forced to purchase crude at fluctuating exchange rates. Global Oil Market Update: Prices Surge to $76.45 Per Barrel Meanwhile, oil prices surged on February 5, 2025, due to concerns over supply disruptions. Brent crude rose 1.03% to $76.45 per barrel, while WTI crude increased 1.88% to $73.89 per barrel. Conclusion The Federal Government’s ban on crude oil exports meant for domestic refineries is a decisive move aimed at improving Nigeria’s refining capacity, reducing fuel imports, and strengthening energy security. However, strict enforcement and increased crude production will be crucial to the policy’s success.
