IntroductionTechnology has changed almost every aspect of our lives, and mental health therapy is no exception. From teletherapy sessions to AI-driven chatbots, technology is reshaping how we access, experience, and benefit from mental health care. But what does this mean for individuals seeking help? Let’s dive into the game-changing role of technology in therapy and how it’s making mental health support more accessible, personalized, and effective. 1. The Rise of TeletherapyGone are the days when therapy meant driving miles to a therapist’s office. Teletherapy has made mental health support available at the click of a button. Platforms like BetterHelp and Talkspace have revolutionized access to professional counselors, allowing people to receive therapy from the comfort of their homes. This is especially beneficial for individuals in remote areas or those with mobility challenges. 2. Mental Health Apps: Your Therapist in Your PocketApps like Headspace, Calm, and Woebot are changing the way we manage stress, anxiety, and depression. These apps provide guided meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) exercises, and even AI-powered emotional support. The best part? They’re available 24/7, making it easier to manage mental well-being at any time of the day. 3. AI and Chatbots in TherapyAI-driven chatbots like Woebot and Wysa use cognitive-behavioral techniques to engage in conversations, track moods, and provide coping strategies. While they don’t replace human therapists, they offer immediate support and guidance, making mental health care more approachable for many. 4. Virtual Reality (VR) for Exposure TherapyVirtual Reality is taking exposure therapy to new heights. For individuals dealing with PTSD, anxiety, or phobias, VR provides a controlled environment to gradually face fears under the guidance of a therapist. It’s an innovative approach that helps people confront their emotions safely and effectively. 5. Data-Driven Mental Health InsightsWearable devices like Fitbit and Apple Watch track heart rate, sleep patterns, and stress levels, providing valuable data that can help therapists and individuals understand mental health patterns. AI-driven analytics can even predict mood shifts, allowing for proactive mental health care. Challenges and Ethical ConcernsWhile technology offers incredible advantages, it also comes with concerns. Issues like data privacy, misinformation, and the risk of replacing human therapists with AI must be carefully addressed. Mental health is deeply personal, and technology should complement—not replace—human interaction. Final ThoughtsTechnology in mental health therapy is more than a trend—it’s a powerful tool that’s here to stay. Whether it’s teletherapy, AI chatbots, VR exposure therapy, or wearable tech, these innovations are making mental health care more accessible and effective. However, the key is to use these tools responsibly, ensuring that they enhance rather than replace human connections. If used wisely, technology has the potential to bridge the gap in mental health support and help more people lead healthier, happier lives. Feeling Burned Out by Social Media? Here’s How to Take a Detox Without Losing Touch Ever feel like you’re stuck in a never-ending scroll? Like your brain is constantly buzzing from notifications, news updates, and the pressure to keep up? You’re not alone. Social media is designed to keep us hooked, but sometimes, taking a step back is exactly what we need. The challenge? How to detox from social media without feeling disconnected from friends, family, and the world. The good news is, you can take a break without feeling like you’ve fallen off the grid. Let’s talk about how. 1. Define Your Why: What’s the Goal of Your Detox? Before you hit that “deactivate” button, get clear on why you’re taking a break. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Do you find yourself comparing your life to others? Is social media interfering with your productivity or mental health? Knowing your reason helps you stay committed and makes the detox feel purposeful rather than restrictive. 2. Set Realistic Boundaries Instead of Going Cold Turkey Quitting social media overnight can feel extreme—like suddenly cutting out caffeine when you’re used to three cups of coffee a day. Instead of a complete shutdown, try these gradual steps: 3. Replace the Habit with Something Meaningful Social media fills time—but what if you replaced it with something more rewarding? Try: Breaking a habit is easier when you swap it for a new, fulfilling activity. 4. Stay Connected in Real Life One of the biggest fears of a social media detox is feeling isolated. But real connections don’t disappear when you log off. In fact, they often get stronger. Here’s how to stay in the loop: 5. Curate Your Online Space for When You Return If you plan to come back, make sure your social media serves you. Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad. Mute negativity. Follow pages that inspire, educate, and uplift you. That way, when you re-enter, it’s a space that enhances your life—not drains it. 6. Enjoy the Benefits and Extend Your Detox if It Feels Right After a few days or weeks, you might notice: ✅ Less stress and anxiety✅ More presence in everyday life✅ Better sleep✅ Higher productivity If it feels good, keep going! Many people who try a temporary detox end up drastically reducing their social media use in the long run. Final Thoughts: Disconnect to Reconnect A social media detox isn’t about punishment—it’s about freedom. It’s about reclaiming your time, mental energy, and focus. The world doesn’t stop when you log off, and neither does your social life. In fact, it often improves. So take that step, set boundaries that work for you, and enjoy the real-life connections waiting beyond the screen. As the first rains of 2025 arrive in line with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMET) predictions, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is preparing to release its Annual Flood Outlook (AFO). This comprehensive report will detail rainfall trends, water levels, expected impacts, and the states and local government areas likely to be affected. Lingering Impact of 2024 Floods The devastating effects of the 2024 floods remain fresh in the nation’s memory. The disaster claimed 465 lives, injured 2,712 individuals, and affected over 1.2 million people across 31 states. Severely impacted regions included Borno, Bauchi, Benue, Adamawa, Kebbi, Anambra, Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Niger, and Kogi. One of the most catastrophic events was the bursting of the Alau Dam in Borno State on September 10, 2024. This incident alone resulted in approximately 150 deaths and displaced over 419,000 people, exacerbating a severe humanitarian crisis that drew national and international attention. In Bauchi State, the floods took 24 lives, left 163 individuals injured, and displaced over 122,000 residents. Businesses, homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges, suffered extensive damage, causing severe economic losses. Experts Call for Proactive Measures Environmentalists and human rights organizations have emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent a repeat of last year’s disaster. Experts advise Nigerians, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to relocate to higher grounds before heavy rains intensify. The National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kabir Ibrahim, urged farmers to leverage flood predictions to mitigate potential agricultural losses. He stated, “Flooding occurs when drainage systems fail to accommodate excess water, leading to oversaturation of the soil. We must implement engineering solutions, such as constructing efficient drainage systems, to divert floodwaters.” Early Warning Systems and Government Responsibilities Authorities must take flood warnings seriously, ensuring prompt dissemination of seasonal climate predictions. AFAN stressed that early warnings are crucial for preparation and disaster mitigation. Ibrahim advised the government to actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clear drainage systems, and enhance waste management practices. Lack of 2025 Flood Preparedness Raises Concerns Philip Jakpor, Executive Director of Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI), expressed skepticism about government preparedness for the 2025 floods. “NiMET and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issue early warnings, yet state governments and emergency agencies often fail to act on them,” he noted. Jakpor called for proactive strategies, including the construction of temporary shelters on high ground and procurement of emergency response equipment such as speedboats and helicopters. He criticized the authorities for focusing on reactive relief efforts rather than preventive measures, saying, “Instead of waiting to distribute food supplies after disasters, we should prioritize infrastructural readiness.” Urgent Need for Flood Mitigation Strategies Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), stressed that the 2024 floods should serve as a wake-up call. “Flooding is not just an environmental hazard—it signifies a larger climate crisis. We must develop master drainage plans and ensure that infrastructure projects are climate-resilient,” he warned. Bassey recommended restoring wetlands, mangroves, and forests as natural flood buffers. He also urged the government to prioritize dam maintenance, as structural weaknesses have historically contributed to flood disasters. Government Must Allocate Resources for Flood Control Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights Nigeria, urged the government to allocate resources proactively rather than wait for disasters to unfold. “Flood risks are high this year, and we must translate NiMET’s forecasts into concrete actions. Local governments should clear flood-prone areas and enforce strict regulations on waste disposal to prevent blocked drainage systems,” Baiyewu advised. She also emphasized the importance of establishing well-equipped emergency shelters and effective early warning systems. “Investing in resilient infrastructure such as dams, embankments, and effective drainage networks is essential to mitigate future disasters,” she added. Shift from Reactive to Proactive Flood Management Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria (AAN), warned against the dangers of reactive flood responses. “We must invest in early warning systems, enhance drainage networks, and reinforce flood defenses before disasters strike. These measures will enable timely evacuations and minimize economic losses,” he explained. Conclusion As Nigeria enters the 2025 rainy season, experts insist that proactive flood management strategies are crucial. With past disasters serving as stark reminders, authorities and citizens alike must take preemptive action to prevent another catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Ekiti Airport: A Game-Changer in Economic Development – Governor Oyebanji Governor Biodun Oyebanji, now approaching three years in office, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, economic growth, and infrastructural development in Ekiti State. He highlighted the significant strides made in agriculture, security, and governance, with the Ekiti Airport playing a crucial role in boosting the state’s economy and accessibility. Advancing Transparency and Good Governance Governor Oyebanji emphasized that strengthening governance through transparency remains a core focus. Under his leadership, all ministries now operate under the Treasury Single Account (TSA), ensuring accountability in financial management. Additionally, the internal revenue agency has been restructured to function autonomously, enhancing revenue generation and compliance across state institutions. These measures contributed to Ekiti State ranking highest in BudgIT’s national transparency survey. Strengthening Regional Security in the Southwest Discussing the recent Southwest Governors’ security summit, Oyebanji reaffirmed the collective commitment to safeguarding citizens. The governors established a regional command structure integrating intelligence-sharing and technology to enhance proactive responses to security challenges. Revolutionizing Agriculture for Economic Independence Ekiti State has positioned itself as a leader in agriculture by shifting from short-term palliatives to sustainable food production. Governor Oyebanji’s administration has invested in large-scale land clearing and cluster farming initiatives, with over 3,000 hectares cleared in the past year. This program has engaged over 2,000 youth in agribusiness, supported by the Ilu Eye Agro Trading Company, which eliminates middlemen and ensures fair pricing for farmers. Future plans include expanding irrigation infrastructure to facilitate year-round farming and establishing modern farm estates equipped with essential amenities to enhance productivity. The Economic Impact of Ekiti Airport Governor Oyebanji emphasized that Ekiti Airport is more than just an infrastructure project—it is a strategic investment that will drive economic growth. The airport, featuring a 3.5km runway, is expected to enhance trade, attract investors, and boost tourism in the landlocked state. The administration is also working on installing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to improve flight operations in adverse weather conditions, making Ekiti Airport one of the most advanced in the region. “Any serious-minded state that prioritizes economic development must invest in transportation infrastructure. Investors, business executives, and tourists require seamless access, and air travel is the fastest and safest means. We are ensuring that Ekiti Airport remains competitive and operationally efficient by partnering with experienced management agencies,” Oyebanji stated. The airport is also set to play a vital role in agricultural exports, aligning with the state’s plan to enhance agribusiness. The government is actively developing logistics frameworks to facilitate the seamless movement of goods from farm clusters to global markets. Sustaining Revenue Growth Ekiti State recorded an impressive 75% growth in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2023, positioning itself among Nigeria’s top-performing states. Governor Oyebanji attributed this success to strict financial reforms, digitalized tax collection systems, and a thriving business environment that encourages investment. The establishment of Amotekun remains one of the most significant developments in the South-West. While challenges exist, progress is being made, and the security outfit has proven effective. Amotekun recruits individuals familiar with the local terrain and deeply connected to the communities they serve. Effective security relies on intelligence, and without it, efforts would be misguided. These personnel, stationed within their localities, have stronger ties with the people, traditional institutions, and the general populace, fostering a sense of safety. They gather intelligence and share it exclusively within the security network, as they possess an in-depth understanding of the environment, including the forests. However, constitutional restrictions currently prevent them from carrying arms. We are in ongoing discussions with the Federal Government regarding this limitation, recognizing both the concerns and the necessity for change. Over time, we hope reason will prevail, leading to a structured framework that permits them to bear arms. While caution is needed in this process, their intelligence is already being shared with formal security agencies for coordinated action. Supreme Court Judgment and Local Governments in Ekiti State As a law-abiding state, we respect the Supreme Court’s ruling, and most states across the country have complied. However, even before the judgment, the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had confirmed that Ekiti State did not interfere with local government allocations. Since Governor Fayemi’s tenure, we have been providing support to local governments. Despite delays in their funds, I ensured that local government workers were paid. Even before December last year, when their allocation had not arrived, we still paid salaries, including those of SUBEB and primary healthcare workers. Contrary to public perception, local governments do not have as much financial capacity as some believe. Second-Term Endorsements I appreciate the numerous endorsements from communities, associations, and political parties for a second term. However, I have neither acknowledged nor accepted them. My tenure lasts four years, and I am currently in my third year. Whether you believe it or not, I am deeply spiritual and firmly believe that leadership is determined by divine will. While I am grateful for the support, our party has a structured process. I became governor through due process, and when the time is right, we will follow the same procedure. I do not wish to be distracted by endorsements at this moment. However, it is within the rights of party members and stakeholders to express their support. Endorsements do not exclude other aspirants from contesting for the office. Once INEC officially signals the beginning of political activities in Ekiti State, I will make a formal statement regarding my decision. Ultimately, my candidacy is not solely my decision—it involves various stakeholders. I did not wake up one day and decide to become governor; I emerged through a process, and when the time comes, we will go through the same process again. For now, my focus remains on governance and delivering results. Infrastructure Development in Ekiti State In recent times, Ekiti State has transformed into a major construction hub, with projects such as the ring road, Ado-Ekiti flyover, and multiple inter-state roads underway. Notably, we have not relied on bonds to finance these projects.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome PDSc DSc DD But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy (1 Peter 2:9-10). Mark 10:46-52 tells the remarkable story of the healing of a certain blind man named Bartimaeus. One day, as the Lord Jesus and His disciples were leaving the city of Jericho, Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside, begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many people around him rebuked him, telling him to be quiet, but Bartimaeus shouted even louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. Throwing off his cloak, Bartimaeus jumped to his feet and approached Jesus. Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi, I want to see.” Moved by Bartimaeus’ faith, Jesus said, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately, Bartimaeus received his sight. He pleaded with the Master to have mercy on him, and it worked. But unlike Bartimaeus, today, as a new creation in Christ, you don’t need to cry, pray or “beg” the Lord for mercy; you have obtained mercy. Hallelujah! Recall what we read in our opening scripture. In Christ, abundant mercy has been given to us before we even thought to ask for it. And if you ever felt like you required His mercy for anything, Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” What a remarkable truth! We’re not told to ask for mercy; we’re told to obtain it. It has already been made available to us in Christ, and we simply take what has been given. So, how much mercy do you want? How much grace do you need, and for what do you require it? You don’t have to beg for it; just collect it! This is amazing because it shows us the lavishness of God’s provision. He gave us mercy and grace before we even had the sense to ask. All we need is to receive. Hallelujah! Moment of meditation: https://loveworldsongs.com/the-king-by-eli-j-and-loveworld-singers-praise-night-22/ PRAYERDear Father, I rejoice in the abundant mercy I’ve obtained in Christ and His superabundant grace which has made me sufficient in all things. Even now, I obtain mercy for the salvation of sinners around the world today—the hardest of hearts, the wayward, the wicked—that they may turn from their ways and embrace the light of the glorious Gospel, in Jesus’ Name. NNPC Gas Ltd Expands Market Leadership with Landmark Gas Supply Agreement NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML), a key player in Nigeria’s energy sector, has taken another major step in expanding its market dominance. The company recently signed an 80 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCF/D) Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Limited. This deal, inked in partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited, will support Ssonic Petroleum’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant at the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The agreement, executed on March 6, marks another milestone in NGML’s mission to power industrial growth through gas distribution. The Importance of the Deal This strategic gas supply agreement strengthens NGML’s position as Nigeria’s top gas marketer by ensuring a consistent and reliable gas supply across various industries. The 20-year contract further cements the company’s reputation as a trusted partner in large-scale gas projects. According to NGML’s Managing Director, Justin U. Ezeala, this deal enhances NGML’s ability to provide tailored gas solutions to investors in Nigeria’s growing energy sector. The agreement reflects NGML’s commitment to fulfilling the federal government’s vision of an industrialized nation powered by cleaner and more efficient energy sources. A Renewable and Sustainable Partnership One of the most remarkable aspects of this agreement is its long-term sustainability. The 20-year deal is renewable, ensuring continued industrial growth and energy reliability for decades to come. NGML, along with its partner NIPCO, has already commissioned a City Gate in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, which will play a key role in distributing gas efficiently within the area. Building on Previous Milestones While this agreement with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd is significant, it is not NGML’s first groundbreaking gas deal. In fact, it follows the landmark 100mscf gas supply agreement NGML signed with Dangote Refinery just months earlier. These partnerships demonstrate NGML’s unwavering commitment to delivering reliable energy solutions and expanding gas utilization across Nigeria. The Negotiation Process and Its Strategic Value Negotiating this agreement was a meticulous process, requiring strategic discussions to ensure mutual benefits for all parties involved. Ultimately, Ssonic Petroleum Ltd recognized the exceptional value proposition offered by NGML and its partner, NIPCO. Boosting Domestic Utilization and Industrial Growth This gas supply deal is set to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s domestic energy market. By providing a stable gas supply to the LNG plant, it will further encourage the use of natural gas—a cleaner, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly fuel—across various industries. This aligns with NNPC’s long-term vision to enhance domestic gas consumption and drive industrialization through sustainable energy solutions. The Future of Nigeria’s Gas Sector With this agreement in place, NGML continues to play a critical role in actualizing Nigeria’s gas-powered industrial revolution. The company remains open to more strategic partnerships that will enhance gas distribution and utilization nationwide. Massive Stakeholder Participation in Nigeria’s Tax Reform Debate The Federal Government’s efforts to modernize Nigeria’s tax system have taken a major step forward, with over 200 memoranda submitted to the National Assembly by diverse interest groups. The submissions, made to both the Senate and House of Representatives, highlight widespread engagement in the proposed tax reforms. Public Hearing on Tax Reforms Draws Widespread Attention During recent public hearings, key stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, and tax professionals, actively participated in shaping the future of Nigeria’s tax policies. The discussions focused on balancing economic growth, revenue generation, and the protection of businesses and citizens from excessive tax burdens. Diverse Perspectives on the Proposed Tax Policies The hearings showcased a variety of viewpoints on the tax reform bills. The House of Representatives alone received 54 memoranda, reflecting significant interest in the proposed changes. While government officials and economists emphasized the benefits of tax compliance and revenue expansion, critics expressed concerns over potential hardships for small businesses and middle-class Nigerians. Key areas of contention included adjustments to the Value Added Tax (VAT) and income tax brackets. Some experts warned that these changes could disproportionately affect low-income earners and struggling businesses, potentially slowing economic growth. Calls for a Balanced Tax System Several organizations proposed alternative solutions to ensure a fair and efficient tax framework. The National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) advocated for lower corporate tax rates to stimulate investment and job creation. The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) also highlighted the need for policies that incentivize local production while avoiding tax increases on raw materials. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) stressed the importance of a progressive tax system that shields low-income workers while ensuring that higher-income earners and large corporations contribute a fair share to national revenue. Civil Society Groups Push for Transparency and Accountability Civil society organizations, including the Tax Justice Network Africa, emphasized the necessity of transparency in tax collection and allocation. They urged the government to implement stronger measures against tax evasion, particularly among multinational corporations, ensuring that tax revenues directly benefit public services and infrastructure development. Representatives from the oil and gas sector also weighed in, stressing the importance of stable tax policies to maintain Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) focused on the need for legal clarity to prevent disputes arising from the proposed tax amendments. What’s Next for Nigeria’s Tax Reform? As the National Assembly deliberates on the feedback from stakeholders, the tax reform process remains an ongoing discussion. Lawmakers are tasked with addressing concerns, refining proposals, and ensuring that the final tax legislation supports economic growth while promoting fairness and sustainability. The ultimate goal is to implement tax laws that foster national development, reduce inequality, and strengthen government revenue collection. With the final legislation expected later this year, all eyes are on the National Assembly to deliver a tax system that benefits both businesses and individuals. What Is Blockchain and Why Should You Care? Imagine a world where you can send money to someone without needing a bank. Sounds futuristic, right? Well, that’s exactly what blockchain technology enables! If you’ve ever heard of Bitcoin or Ethereum, then you’ve already encountered blockchain in action. But what exactly is it? Let’s break it down in a simple, no-jargon way. The Basics of Blockchain Technology At its core, blockchain is like a digital ledger. Think of it as an online notebook that records transactions in a way that no one can tamper with. Every time you make a transaction (whether it’s sending Bitcoin, recording a contract, or even tracking a shipment), it gets added as a “block” to a long chain of records—hence the name blockchain. Why Is Blockchain So Secure? One of the main reasons blockchain is a game-changer is its security. Unlike traditional databases, where a single company or bank controls everything, blockchain is decentralized. This means no single person or entity owns it. Instead, transactions are verified by a network of computers across the world. This makes hacking nearly impossible. Every block on the chain is encrypted and linked to the previous one. Once a block is added, it cannot be changed—this makes blockchain immutable, meaning data remains permanent and tamper-proof. How Does Blockchain Relate to Cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin) is built on blockchain technology. Here’s how it works: This is why cryptocurrencies are often called decentralized currencies—because they aren’t controlled by any government or financial institution. More Than Just Cryptocurrency While blockchain powers cryptocurrencies, its use goes far beyond digital money. Here are some industries where blockchain is making waves: The Future of Blockchain Blockchain is still evolving, and its full potential is yet to be unlocked. Governments, businesses, and even social media platforms are experimenting with blockchain to improve transparency and efficiency. Whether you’re a tech geek or just a curious explorer, understanding blockchain today will put you ahead of the curve. Read more about blockchain from Investopedia Blockchain is transforming the way we think about money, security, and even business transactions. What are your thoughts on its future? Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has made it clear that she has no plans to sign an artist under her label, citing the challenges associated with talent management. In an exclusive interview with Forbes Africa, the award-winning singer shared insights into why she prefers to support upcoming musicians through alternative means. Tiwa Savage on Why She Won’t Sign Another Artist Speaking candidly, Tiwa Savage addressed the common expectation that she should sign budding artists under her brand. However, she believes artist management comes with excessive stress. “People always ask me, ‘When are you going to sign an artist?’ Honestly, I don’t think I have the gift for it. Managing an artist is stressful… I could be asleep and suddenly wake up to find my artist trending for something unrelated to music,” she revealed. Tiwa Savage’s Vision for a Music School While she may not be keen on signing artists directly, Tiwa Savage remains dedicated to nurturing young talent. She expressed her plans to establish a music school, providing upcoming musicians with proper training before they join record labels that can genuinely support their careers. “I do have the gift to help, which is why I am working on setting up a music school. There, artists can develop their craft before signing with a label that truly understands how to promote them,” she explained. The Importance of Ownership in the African Music Industry Beyond her personal career, Tiwa Savage emphasized the need for African artists to maintain control over their creative works. She strongly advocates for ownership in the music industry, encouraging musicians to prioritize their rights over their art, publishing, and record labels. “We need to own our music, our publishing, and our labels,” she stressed. “It is essential that we take charge of telling our own stories.” Advice to Emerging Artists: Don’t Rush to the Top Tiwa Savage also offered valuable advice to up-and-coming musicians, urging them to build a solid foundation before seeking mainstream success. She warned about the pressures that come with fame, emphasizing the freedom that artists have in their early creative stages. “A lot of artists rush to the top, but once you get there, you start dealing with expectations—streams, concerts, contracts,” she noted. “In the beginning, you have the freedom to create without restrictions. Build a strong foundation, so when criticism comes, you don’t lose yourself.” Building Africa’s Music Industry Instead of Seeking Validation Abroad Tiwa Savage challenged the trend of African artists striving to break into international markets, arguing that the focus should instead be on strengthening Africa’s music industry. “Why are we always trying to break into foreign markets? We should be making our industry strong enough that others want to break into ours,” she stated. “With the right infrastructure, affordable data, and investments, we wouldn’t need validation from elsewhere.” Conclusion Tiwa Savage remains a powerhouse in the African music scene, not just for her incredible talent but for her dedication to empowering the next generation. While she may not be signing artists under her wing, her vision for a structured and sustainable music industry in Africa is undeniable. The Nigerian Senate has debunked widespread claims that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was suspended due to allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Instead, the legislative body clarified that her suspension resulted from repeated violations of Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended) and a pattern of unparliamentary behavior. Why Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Was Suspended According to Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Akpoti-Uduaghan was sanctioned for disregarding Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate’s procedural rules. In a statement released on Saturday, Bamidele refuted media reports insinuating that her suspension stemmed from accusations against Akpabio, labeling such claims as misleading and deliberately deceptive. Following the recommendations of its Committee on Ethics and Privileges, the Senate imposed a six-month suspension on Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing misconduct and her refusal to adhere to assigned seating arrangements during plenary sessions. However, the chamber provided an opportunity for reconsideration, stating that if Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a formal apology, the leadership may lift the suspension before the six-month period elapses. Instead of adhering to Senate protocols, Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly misled the public by claiming she was targeted for her sexual harassment allegations. Bamidele emphasized that disciplinary action against the senator was solely based on her conduct and non-compliance with established legislative rules. Procedural Flaws in Sexual Harassment Petition Bamidele further disclosed that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition on sexual harassment failed to meet the Senate’s procedural requirements for submitting complaints. He reiterated that if she had followed due process, the petition would have been assessed on merit. “The Senate has noted various misleading media reports falsely linking Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension to allegations of sexual harassment. This narrative is entirely incorrect. The senator’s failure to adhere to Senate guidelines led to disciplinary action,” the statement read. The Ethics and Privileges Committee found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of breaching Senate Standing Orders, leading to her suspension. The violations cited in the report include: Public Trust and Democratic Implications The Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law (AIRL), a civic rights organization, has warned that the Senate’s handling of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension could erode public trust and jeopardize democratic values. AIRL Chairman, Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa, stressed the need for legislative restraint, warning that denying Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituency representation could damage the Senate’s reputation. The group described the ongoing Senate dispute as a “show of shame” that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions. AIRL urged the 10th Senate to prioritize national interest and resolve the conflict through dialogue to prevent long-term political instability. Conclusion As tensions persist, stakeholders continue to call for transparency in governance. The Senate’s actions and responses will determine whether this controversy fades or escalates into a larger political crisis. To maintain institutional credibility, political leaders must act in accordance with democratic principles and constitutional provisions.
