Truck Operators in Lagos Protest Sharp Sand Price Hike by Dredgers Association

A growing economic crisis has led to a standoff between truck drivers and the Dredgers Association in Lagos State, as members of the Ikorodu-Ketu Truck Owners and Drivers Association launched a peaceful protest over a sudden surge in the cost of sharp sand. On Monday, dozens of truck operators gathered at their operational base in Ikorodu to demonstrate against the recent price jump. The cost of 30 tons of sharp sand, a key material in construction, reportedly rose from ₦126,000 to ₦178,500 within weeks—an alarming ₦52,000 increase that has disrupted their operations. Drivers Decry Unbearable Price Hike According to Mr. Sikiru Aderoju, chairman of the association, this marks the third price increase in less than three months. He expressed deep concerns over the ripple effect on their businesses. “We had just settled into the new ₦126,000 rate after previous hikes. Now, it’s ₦178,500. Our customers can’t afford this and have stopped booking deliveries,” Aderoju lamented. Allegations of Market Manipulation Another truck owner, Mr. Oluwaseun Adelaja, described the situation as a calculated attempt to edge out independent transporters. He noted that the cost of sharp sand was only ₦85,000 in July 2024, which climbed to ₦110,000 in November, then ₦126,000 in January 2025. The current spike, however, threatens the sustainability of their businesses. “While we’ve managed past increases due to rising diesel and maintenance costs, this latest price hike feels like a move to monopolize the market,” Adelaja said. Reports of Assault During Protest A driver, Mr. Sodiq Owolabi, also recounted being assaulted by thugs allegedly working with the dredgers during a previous protest. “They took me to their barracks and beat me up. I was only trying to shield my boss from harm,” he claimed. The drivers called on the Lagos State Government to intervene and demand fair pricing from the dredgers to ensure affordability and market balance. Dredgers Justify Price Surge Responding to the protest, Mr. Tunde Adigun, Chairman of the Ikorodu Dredgers Association, defended the increase. He cited soaring operational costs and supply-chain disruptions as the cause. “It now costs over ₦100 million to purchase a truck that was ₦39 million. We also dredge from deeper waters, nearly 4km offshore, which raises our expenses,” he explained. Adigun also insisted that the association had held meetings with truck unions before the price changes. “Every adjustment was made with prior dialogue. We’ve even shut down five dredging sites due to lack of profitability. Some of our international partners, including Chinese firms, have exited,” he added. Economic Tensions Escalating The dispute underscores broader economic challenges affecting Nigeria’s construction and transport sectors. As sand is a foundational material for building projects, sharp increases in its cost could impact both public and private infrastructure development. What’s Next? Stakeholders are urging swift government mediation to stabilize pricing mechanisms and protect the livelihoods of independent truck operators. Putin Open to Direct Peace Talks With Ukraine as War Continues

In a notable development amidst the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to engage in direct peace negotiations with Ukraine. This statement, delivered on Monday during an interview with Russian state media, marks one of the clearest signals from Moscow favoring diplomacy since the early stages of the war. Ukraine Welcomes Dialogue to End Civilian Attacks Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while not directly responding to Putin’s statement, reiterated Ukraine’s openness to any discussion that would result in an end to assaults on civilian populations. In his nightly address, Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of halting attacks on non-combatants, reinforcing Kyiv’s commitment to humanitarian concerns. “We are ready for any form of negotiation that can protect our citizens,” Zelenskyy stated. International Pressure for Ceasefire Progress Both leaders are reportedly under increased pressure from international stakeholders. The United States has hinted at withdrawing from its mediatory role unless visible progress is achieved. The Easter truce, unilaterally declared by Moscow and lasting 30 hours, saw each side accusing the other of violations, highlighting the fragile nature of temporary ceasefires. Following the truce, Putin confirmed that hostilities had resumed, but he maintained that Russia remains receptive to any credible peace proposal. “We have always shown a positive approach toward peace efforts and we expect the same response from Kyiv,” Putin noted. Upcoming Peace Talks With Western Allies Ukraine is set to engage in new discussions with the United States and European Union representatives in London. These conversations will serve as a follow-up to a prior Paris meeting, where Western powers explored feasible strategies to conclude the war, which has now persisted for over three years. For a comprehensive background on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, refer to this in-depth analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations. Looking Ahead The prospect of direct peace talks between Putin and Zelenskyy introduces a glimmer of hope in a conflict marked by prolonged violence and humanitarian crises. However, both sides must overcome mutual distrust and international skepticism to achieve any sustainable resolution. Russian Drone Strike Triggers Fires and Destruction in Odesa Residential District

In a major escalation of its ongoing assault on Ukraine, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack overnight, targeting densely populated residential zones in the strategic port city of Odesa, located along the Black Sea. According to Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, the drone barrage struck a civilian neighborhood, causing widespread damage and sparking fires in multiple apartment buildings. Trukhanov shared visuals of the aftermath via Telegram, which showed shattered windows, charred facades, and uncontrolled flames engulfing sections of residential complexes. “The enemy struck a densely populated residential zone in Odesa,” Trukhanov reported, emphasizing the civilian nature of the area affected. Regional Governor Oleh Kiper added that the attack not only destroyed homes but also affected civilian infrastructure, an educational institution, and multiple vehicles. Emergency response units were immediately deployed to handle the crisis, and authorities are still verifying casualty figures as of this report. Odesa: A Recurring Target in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Odesa, known for its three key Black Sea ports, has frequently been under attack since the start of the war over three years ago. The city’s strategic importance has made it a consistent target for Russian drone and missile strikes. LMSINT Media earlier reported on the strategic vulnerability of Odesa due to its maritime infrastructure and proximity to active conflict zones. This recent strike further illustrates the intensification of aerial warfare tactics by Russian forces. According to a detailed report by BBC News, Russia has increasingly relied on drone assaults in 2025 as part of its broader military strategy against Ukraine, often targeting civilian and logistical hubs to destabilize local economies and morale. Final Notes As Ukrainian emergency teams continue search-and-rescue operations, this attack marks another grim chapter in the prolonged conflict. The repeated targeting of non-military zones raises concerns about violations of international humanitarian law, and global observers are calling for stronger protective measures for Ukrainian civilians. Bishop Kukah Pays Tribute to Pope Francis: A Farewell to a True Global Icon

LMSINT MEDIA reports that the global Catholic community and millions of faithful are mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who reportedly died at the age of 88 due to complications from a cerebral stroke and heart failure. The Vatican confirmed the solemn news early Monday morning. Source: The Vatican News In a heartfelt statement, Bishop Mathew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto, described Pope Francis as “a sincere and compassionate leader the world will deeply miss.” He praised the late pontiff for redefining the Christian message and championing humanitarian causes throughout his papacy. A Leader Who Stood for the Marginalized According to Bishop Kukah, Pope Francis was a revolutionary figure who challenged traditional barriers within the Church, freeing Jesus’ message from “dogmatic cages” and restoring its essence of liberation and love. He noted that the late pope consistently prioritized the vulnerable, the poor, and those often overlooked by society. “With Pope Francis gone, the world has lost a moral compass. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the weak, spoke out against injustice, and reminded us of the urgency of caring for our common home.” — Bishop Kukah Environmental Stewardship and Interfaith Brotherhood Bishop Kukah highlighted Pope Francis’ pivotal 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’, which brought global awareness to environmental degradation and climate change, urging political and corporate leaders to act responsibly. Read more from the UN on Laudato Si’ In 2020, the Pope’s commitment to interfaith dialogue bore fruit with the publication of Fratelli Tutti, co-developed with the Chief Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque. This influential encyclical called for universal brotherhood, social cohesion, and collaboration beyond religious boundaries. Evangelii Gaudium and His Pastoral Vision From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis made it clear he would focus on a message of joy and spiritual renewal. His 2013 document Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) served as a pastoral blueprint, emphasizing inclusiveness, mercy, and outreach to the peripheries of society. Kukah acknowledged that although some of the pope’s views stirred debate, there was no denying his profound impact on faith, politics, and humanity at large. “Some may interpret his legacy through ideological lenses, but the authenticity of his mission cannot be erased. His death is a turning point—not just for Catholics, but for the world.” A Church at a Crossroads As the Church now looks to the future, Bishop Kukah expressed hope for a new pontiff who will build upon Pope Francis’ legacy. He emphasized the timeless relevance of Jesus’ teachings, which transcend political or ideological lines. US Airstrikes in Sanaa Kill 12 Civilians, Injure 30 — Huthis Launch Counteroffensives

LMSINT MEDIA reports that at least 12 civilians lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries in overnight US military airstrikes targeting the Farwa district in Sanaa, according to the Huthi-affiliated Saba news agency. The report indicates the strikes hit both a residential neighborhood and a local market, causing severe devastation. Additional raids were documented in other Yemeni regions, including Marib (central province), Hodeida (western region), and Saada, the northern stronghold of the Huthis. Huthi Response: Attacks on US Carriers and Israeli Sites Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the official spokesperson of the Huthi military, stated that in retaliation for the deadly strikes, the group executed targeted drone offensives against two US aircraft carriers and Israeli military positions. He further declared these actions a direct response to continuous American aggression in Yemeni territories. US Justification and Ongoing Operations The US military has been conducting frequent operations in Yemen, claiming it aims to deter the Iran-supported Huthis from interfering with international maritime activities in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. On Thursday, a US-led strike on the Ras Issa oil terminal reportedly caused over 80 deaths and injured 150, intensifying concerns over civilian safety. According to the United Nations, Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalation, urging both parties to de-escalate hostilities. He particularly urged the Huthis to halt their drone and missile launches toward Israel and stop targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea. For a detailed UN statement, visit the official United Nations News portal. Root of the Conflict: Huthi Solidarity with Hamas The Huthis stated their missile offensives were launched in solidarity with Hamas, amid its conflict with Israeli forces in Gaza. This transnational show of support has contributed to the broader regional instability. The latest wave of US strikes, according to analysts, escalated after President Donald Trump resumed office in January 2025, marking a more aggressive shift in US foreign policy in the Middle East. Tensions Rise as Ghana’s Council of State Swaps Said Sinare for Actress Kalsoume Sinare in Latest Ambassadorial Nomination

Ghana’s political atmosphere is heating up following the unexpected removal of Alhaji Said Sinare, a seasoned National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician, from a high-level ambassadorial shortlist. His replacement by his cousin, Kalsoume Sinare, a well-known Ghanaian actress, has sparked outrage and concern within the Council of State. Alhaji Sinare, who has served as Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, was initially part of the 22-person nomination list submitted to the Council last Thursday for final vetting. However, reports from The Broadcaster indicate that his name was removed at the last minute, causing unrest among political insiders. This unexpected switch has been viewed by many within government and civil society as a major affront to party loyalty and competence. Said Sinare’s deep-rooted efforts in galvanizing support, particularly within Zongo communities, were instrumental in previous elections, including the 2016, 2020, and 2024 polls. Council’s Internal Resistance Insider sources reveal that members of the Council initially opposed the change, citing Alhaji Sinare’s political capital and decades-long service to the NDC. Despite these concerns, internal party dynamics and possible external influences overruled the push for his reinstatement. Several observers have pointed fingers at political nepotism, warning that such decisions might alienate key party loyalists. The Zongo community, where Sinare holds significant sway, has reportedly been disheartened by this shift. According to a report by Modern Ghana, political favoritism remains one of the most divisive issues within the NDC’s current structure. Backlash and Party Pressure The NDC leadership, including President John Mahama, is now under immense pressure to revisit the controversial decision. Party supporters across various constituencies have expressed dissatisfaction, with many warning that removing trusted figures like Alhaji Sinare could have long-term electoral consequences. There’s growing concern that this act might not only damage internal unity but also dampen voter enthusiasm in critical regions where Zongo influence plays a strategic role. What’s Next? The unfolding scenario has created a dilemma for the NDC: uphold the decision and risk grassroots demoralization or reverse course and risk further intra-party tension. Donald Trump Backs Long Island Town in Battle to Preserve Chiefs Mascot

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared his support for the town of Massapequa, Long Island, as it challenges New York State’s decision to ban Native American-themed school logos and mascots. The issue revolves around the Massapequa School District, which has used the name “Chiefs” for decades in tribute to the region’s Native American heritage. Despite fighting a protracted legal battle that lasted nearly two years, the school board was ultimately ordered by the state to discontinue the use of the logo. Taking to his Truth Social platform on Monday evening, Trump stated he has directed Linda McMahon, his former Small Business Administrator and a prominent ally, to take action through the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of the Massapequa community. “I fully stand with the people of Massapequa, Long Island, who are fighting passionately to retain the ‘Chiefs’ name for their schools and sports teams,” Trump wrote. “To force them into abandoning a decades-old identity is unjust and deeply disrespectful to our proud Native American communities.” He emphasized the widespread community support for keeping the name, citing that the logo has become a key part of the school’s heritage and local identity. Trump added, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the term ‘Chief’ — it symbolizes leadership and strength. Look at the Kansas City Chiefs; they haven’t changed their name, and nobody is forcing them to.” In April 2023, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) mandated that all public schools eliminate mascots and imagery related to Native American culture, unless they have explicit tribal approval. This directive led to legal resistance from multiple districts, including Massapequa. Source: NYSED.gov Despite setbacks in court, local officials continue to explore legal and legislative options to maintain their longstanding school identity. Wike’s Allegiance to APC: Rivers PDP Faction Leader’s Allegations

A factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Robinson Ewor, has accused Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), of working as an insider mole for the All Progressives Congress (APC), aimed at weakening the opposition from within. Ewor believes Wike’s actions are part of a deliberate strategy to destabilize the PDP and thwart its ability to challenge the APC, both in Rivers State and nationally. Ewor, speaking on The Morning Show hosted by Arise Television on Monday, emphasized that Wike can no longer be regarded as a member of the PDP. He pointed out that Wike had publicly pledged allegiance to the APC, further asserting that his actions in the PDP were aimed at dismantling the opposition party. “I’ve expressed this before and I will reiterate: Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, no longer belongs to the PDP. His presence in the PDP is a mission to bring it down and aid the destruction of opposition forces, not just in Rivers but across Nigeria,” Ewor declared. The factional leader criticized Wike for interfering in PDP leadership affairs while holding a position in an APC-led federal government. Ewor particularly pointed out Wike’s insistence on keeping Sam Anyanwu as the national secretary of the PDP, despite his clear support for the APC’s agenda. “Wike’s continued involvement in PDP matters is inappropriate. He has committed publicly to supporting the APC in the 2027 elections. He should focus on his role in the APC and leave PDP issues to those who are truly committed to the party,” Ewor added. Wike’s role in the PDP has sparked tension within the party, with many members questioning his true loyalties and his long-term intentions. Last Friday, Wike also called for the removal of Siminalayi Fubara as the governor of Rivers State, further escalating the political drama. Pope Francis: Cardinals Set to Meet and Plan for His Funeral

On Tuesday, cardinals will convene in the Vatican to discuss the funeral arrangements for Pope Francis, who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. The funeral will be a significant event attended by world leaders, marking the beginning of the transition towards electing a new pope in an upcoming conclave. Pope Francis’ death ends an often turbulent papacy that witnessed tensions with traditionalists, as well as his tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized. Earlier this year, the pontiff spent several weeks in the hospital battling double pneumonia but had shown signs of recovery, even making a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. Funeral Preparations BeginFollowing the pope’s sudden death, long-standing Vatican rituals were immediately set in motion. Among these is the ceremonial breaking of the “Fisherman’s Ring” and lead seal to ensure they cannot be used by anyone else. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, who led prayers in St. Peter’s Square on Monday evening, expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’ leadership, calling him “a pilgrim of hope” and recognizing his contributions to the Church. At 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, all cardinals in Rome are scheduled to meet at the Vatican to finalize plans for the funeral, which is expected to take place sometime between Friday and Sunday. The service will be attended by notable world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who, despite his differences with the pope on immigration, confirmed his attendance along with his wife. Argentine President Javier Milei, a fellow native of Pope Francis, will also be present. Pope’s Final Wishes and Upcoming ConclaveIn an unusual departure from tradition, Pope Francis specified in his final testament that he wished to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major, rather than St. Peter’s Basilica, reflecting his personal wishes for his final resting place. Meanwhile, the Vatican has begun preparing for the highly secretive conclave that will elect the next pope. The gathering of cardinals will also include discussions about the daily operations of the Church before a new pope is chosen. Typically, a conclave takes place within 15 to 20 days of the pope’s death, which means the process is expected to begin no earlier than May 6. Currently, there is no clear frontrunner to succeed Pope Francis, but with at least 135 cardinals eligible to vote, the election will be watched closely by millions around the world. Delta Flight Engine Fire Sparks Emergency Evacuation at Orlando Airport

In a concerning aviation incident on Monday, a Delta Air Lines aircraft experienced an engine fire while preparing for takeoff at Orlando International Airport, prompting the emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew members. The aircraft involved, an Airbus A330, was scheduled to depart for Atlanta but was halted following the fire. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the incident occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. EDT as the plane was pushing back from the gate. All 282 passengers and 12 crew members on Delta Flight 1213 were safely evacuated using emergency slides, with no injuries reported. The FAA has confirmed it is launching a full investigation into the cause of the engine fire. Related safety regulations and aviation updates can be found via the official FAA.gov. Swift Response from Airport Authorities In a social media update, Orlando International Airport confirmed the fire was isolated to the aircraft’s tailpipe section during taxi on the ramp. Emergency responders from the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team were on scene quickly to contain the situation. Delta Airlines released a statement noting that its crew followed standard safety protocols upon noticing flames, ensuring a swift and safe evacuation. The airline has dispatched a separate aircraft to continue passengers’ travel to their final destinations later that day. Additionally, Delta’s maintenance division has taken the affected plane for technical evaluation. Recurring Pattern in US Aviation This marks another serious incident in what has become a worrisome trend in US aviation safety. In a separate occurrence just weeks earlier, an American Airlines aircraft experienced a similar engine fire during taxiing at Denver International Airport, forcing passengers to evacuate via the wing. These incidents come on the heels of a deadly mid-air crash in January, where an American Airlines regional jet collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport, killing at least 67 people, according to CNN. SDP’s Prince Adebayo Slams Tinubu’s Inaction Amid Rising Killings in Plateau and Benue

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has openly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging his failure to govern effectively in light of the escalating security crisis in Plateau and Benue States. Adebayo voiced his concern during a conversation with Daily Post at a celebratory event in Abuja marking his wife Queen Lilian’s 50th birthday. He emphasized that the tragic resurgence of violence in both states reflects the government’s disregard for public safety. “What’s alarming is not just the bloodshed but that Nigerians seem surprised by Tinubu’s inaction. It’s evident that this administration prioritizes electoral victories over effective governance. A president’s foremost duty is securing the nation,” Adebayo declared. Calling for urgent action, he insisted that President Tinubu must revamp Nigeria’s deteriorating security framework to safeguard lives. He warned that continued complacency would lead to further national instability. “We must stop treating security as a political game. What’s happening in Plateau and Benue is tragic, and the president needs to address it with a serious mindset,” he added. In a related statement, Lagos State SDP Chairman, Hon. Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, echoed Adebayo’s sentiments. He urged Nigerians to embrace the SDP as a viable alternative for national transformation, lamenting that the promised “change” had only led to disappointment and suffering. Meanwhile, in Plateau State, a significant protest was held by Christian leaders, including the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Polycarp Lubo. The demonstrators marched in opposition to the recent mass killings in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, where over 100 individuals lost their lives in under two weeks. Similarly, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, raised concerns about the state being under siege by violent armed herders, stressing that entire communities are being displaced. These developments raise deep questions about Nigeria’s national security priorities and underscore the urgency for comprehensive reforms.
