Rotimi Amaechi Accuses Tinubu of Violating Nigeria’s Constitution in Rivers State Crisis

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has openly accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of violating Nigeria’s constitution over his handling of the political crisis in Rivers State. Amaechi expressed strong concern about what he described as the unconstitutional removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the subsequent declaration of a state of emergency, actions he believes undermine the rule of law and democratic values in the country. Speaking at the 9th Annual Leadership Discourse hosted by the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF) in Lagos, themed “Fearless Leadership: A Panacea for Sustainable Development”, the former Rivers State Governor criticized the decision as a breach of the country’s highest legal authority—the Constitution. Amaechi Blasts Weak National Assembly Amaechi did not only criticize the president but also expressed deep disappointment in the National Assembly, which he labeled a “very weak institution” for allegedly aiding and abetting what he termed the installation of an unconstitutional government in Rivers State. “In a system where leaders act on their whims rather than the law, governance becomes tyrannical,” he said. “The current state of emergency declared in Rivers State is not just illegal—it violates the very sacredness of our Constitution.” He continued, “What we are witnessing is not merely a disregard for legal principles, but a complete breakdown of constitutional order. The president didn’t just break the law; he broke the Nigerian Constitution.” Violation of Democratic Norms Rotimi Amaechi likened the Nigerian Constitution to a sacred document, comparing it to a nation’s Bible, whose sanctity should not be compromised. He lamented that despite the removal of a duly elected governor and the appointment of a retired military officer, Ibok-Ete Ibas, as an administrator, there has been no public accountability or major institutional resistance. “The removal of an elected governor and his deputy, followed by appointing a military administrator, signals a dangerous drift away from democracy,” Amaechi warned. Background on the Rivers State Crisis The crisis in Rivers State escalated in recent weeks following political disagreements within the state assembly. In response, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspended the governor and his deputy, and installed a military administrator. This move has sparked outrage among political analysts, civil society groups, and opposition leaders across the country. Sitting Governors in Nigeria Who Defected from PDP to APC While in Office

In a surprising political turn, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move was confirmed after a private meeting held at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, signaling a major political realignment in Delta, a historically PDP-dominated state. LMSINT MEDIA gathered that Oborevwori’s defection follows a trend of political shifts witnessed over the last decade, where serving governors have crossed party lines, particularly from PDP to APC, seeking broader political alliances, federal influence, or development opportunities. A Decade of Political Crossovers: PDP Governors Who Joined APC Let’s take a closer look at the list of sitting Nigerian governors who defected from PDP to APC while still holding office, reflecting the dynamic nature of the country’s political landscape. 1. Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta State) The most recent defector, Oborevwori’s move to the APC echoes that of his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, signaling a dramatic shift in Delta State’s political allegiance after decades under PDP leadership. 2. Dave Umahi (Ebonyi State) In November 2020, Dave Umahi left PDP during his second term to embrace the APC, praising the infrastructure strides made under then-President Muhammadu Buhari. Umahi also cited the Southeast’s marginalisation as a key reason for the switch. 3. Bello Matawalle (Zamfara State) In June 2021, amid political unrest in Zamfara, Governor Matawalle defected to APC, aiming to consolidate power and establish stronger ties with the ruling party at the center. 4. Ben Ayade (Cross River State) Ayade, in May 2021, announced his defection from PDP to APC. He explained his alignment with the federal government was necessary to fast-track development efforts across Cross River State. 5. Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State) Tambuwal initially switched to APC prior to the 2015 elections, though he returned to PDP in 2018. Despite this, he remained a central figure in discussions about possible re-defection during his time in office. 6. Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State) In 2014, while still serving as governor, Wamakko defected from PDP to APC, contributing to the significant momentum that led to APC’s eventual victory in the 2015 general elections. 7. Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State) Also in 2014, Ahmed switched to APC, though he later returned to the PDP. His temporary alliance with the ruling party helped strengthen the APC’s foothold in the North Central region at the time. APC Chairman: More Governors to Join Before 2027 Elections Speaking in Abuja, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje hinted that more opposition governors are preparing to join APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. This statement came during a formal event welcoming key leaders from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, including Senator Kawu Ismailia representing Kano South. For a detailed report on Ganduje’s comments and the growing political shifts, visit Premium Times Nigeria. Conclusion As political realignments continue ahead of future elections, these high-profile defections signify a changing political narrative in Nigeria. The implications for governance, party strategies, and voter sentiment remain profound as the APC consolidates its base. Federal Judges Halt Key Aspects of Trump’s Executive Orders on Voting, Education, and Immigration

A series of rulings by U.S. federal judges have blocked significant portions of former President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders targeting voting laws, immigration enforcement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in schools. The decisions mark a substantial legal setback for Trump’s ongoing policy efforts during the election season. Court Blocks Citizenship Requirement in Voter Registration In a high-profile ruling, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled against a March 25 executive order by President Trump that sought to include a proof of citizenship requirement on the federal voter registration form. The Democratic Party filed a legal challenge, arguing that the president lacks constitutional authority to alter federal election laws unilaterally. The judge agreed with the plaintiffs, issuing an injunction that prevents federal agencies from requiring individuals to verify citizenship before offering them voter registration opportunities—especially when applying for assistance at public agencies. Federal Judge Pushes Back Against DEI Funding Cuts in Schools In another critical decision, Judge Landya McCafferty stopped the U.S. Department of Education from enforcing part of a memo that would strip funding from schools unless they eliminate DEI initiatives. According to her ruling, these actions “erode foundational democratic principles” and echo tactics used by authoritarian regimes. The memo had threatened schools with federal funding cuts if they continued implementing programs perceived to promote racial equity or identity-based learning—policies the Trump administration classified as discriminatory. Immigration Order Violates Court Settlement Meanwhile, Judge Stephanie Gallagher ruled that the Trump administration must request the return of a Salvadoran national who had been deported in violation of an existing court settlement. The judge emphasized the deportation was carried out in bad faith and mandated that no further deportations occur under similar conditions. Sanctuary City Funding Withholding Declared Unlawful In a final ruling, Judge William Orrick blocked attempts by the Trump administration to withhold federal funds from jurisdictions known as sanctuary cities. These cities had declined to fully cooperate with immigration enforcement efforts. Orrick determined that the executive action was unconstitutional and violated previous federal agreements. Jamie Carragher Names PSG as Champions League Favorites Over Arsenal

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made his stance clear ahead of the UEFA Champions League semi-final showdown between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Despite Arsenal’s impressive campaign, Carragher is not backing the Premier League side to lift the trophy. Instead, the football pundit expressed support for PSG to claim the Champions League title, stating that their current team setup would make the victory significant for the future of football. The semi-final clash between Arsenal and PSG is set to commence next week, with the winner advancing to face either Barcelona or Inter Milan in the final, scheduled to take place in Germany next month. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher said: “I can’t say I’d like to see Arsenal win it because I’d just be lying. I don’t like to see other English teams winning big European competitions.” He went on to explain that a PSG victory would symbolize a positive shift in their team’s philosophy, especially after moving past the era of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé. “If PSG won it, it’s almost good for the game in that they have had Messi, Neymar and Mbappé and are now transitioning into a new era with young, dynamic talents. They’ve become more of a unit.” Arsenal reached the semi-finals by knocking out Real Madrid, while PSG advanced after defeating Aston Villa in a thrilling quarter-final. Share Intelligence with Us – DHQ Urges Yola Residents

On Thursday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) launched its first-ever military diplomacy and sensitisation campaign in Yola South Local Government Area, located in Adamawa State. The campaign called on citizens to foster peace, security, and patriotism within their communities. The event, organized by the Directorate of Defence Media Operations, took place at Shagari Primary School, with the aim of enhancing civil-military relations through open dialogue and mutual trust. It is part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration between the military and local communities across Nigeria. “We are here to appreciate your support and to encourage you to share credible intelligence with us. Our message is also to discourage participation in criminal activities, cultism, and kidnapping. The military is your friend, not your enemy,” Egbunu stated. He emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence, urging residents to report grievances to nearby military formations to help avoid communal clashes. Furthermore, Egbunu called on parents to monitor their children’s behavior and warned against the spread of fake news via social media, noting that misinformation disrupts national peace. Egbunu also highlighted the military’s non-combat roles, such as offering medical outreach, educational support, and providing boreholes. He stressed the importance of community trust and engagement in achieving these goals. Brig.-Gen. Paul Zawaya, Commander of the 23 Brigade Yola, spoke through the Brigade’s Intelligence Officer, Lt.-Col. Felix Ayeni, to express gratitude to the residents and local authorities.
