Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has affirmed his continued allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite the recent defection of his 2023 vice-presidential running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku emphasized that he harbors no resentment toward Okowa and upholds the democratic principle of freedom of association.
Speaking through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku highlighted that every individual has the constitutional right to choose their political affiliation. “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar bears no grudge,” Ibe stated. “As a true democrat, he respects the right of citizens to align with any political party of their choice. It is a cornerstone of democracy and vital for its sustainability.”
The former Vice-President also clarified that he has no intention of leaving the PDP. Addressing rumors about potential coalitions or defections, Ibe reiterated, “We have previously issued a clear statement—Atiku Abubakar remains committed to the PDP and has no plan to join any other party.”
The clarification follows public remarks made by Okowa, former Governor of Delta State, expressing regret over contesting the 2023 elections alongside Atiku. According to Okowa, the political climate in his region did not favor another northerner ascending to the presidency. “Even during the campaign period, I sensed a disconnect. Our people were not enthusiastic about supporting another northern candidate,” he said.
In a surprising turn, Okowa also voiced support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s completion of an eight-year tenure. “For national stability, I believe President Tinubu should serve his full two terms. After that, the presidency can return to the North,” he said during a public statement.
Despite the political realignment, Atiku remains steadfast in his mission within the PDP, championing national unity and party restructuring.
