Introduction

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, has announced an indefinite strike to address pressing issues. The union advises students to ignore claims from the university management and the Students’ Union that normal activities continue on campus.

Reasons for the Strike

ASUU-LASU outlined its grievances in a statement released on December 8, 2024, co-signed by Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Secretary Sylvester Idowu. Key concerns include:

  1. Salary Increment Issues:
    • The Federal Government approved a salary increment of 25% to 35% in January 2023.
    • While the increase has been implemented in federal universities and 18 state universities, LASU staff remain excluded.
  2. Salary Disparity Among Institutions:
    • Staff at LASU earn less than their counterparts at Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University of Education.
    • Despite recommendations from a government-constituted committee to harmonize salaries, no action has been taken.

Union’s Appeal to Students

ASUU-LASU urged students to show understanding and maturity during this period, emphasizing:

  • Solidarity: Students are encouraged to stay calm and await updates.
  • Non-Interference: Students should refrain from meddling in matters that concern the welfare of university staff.

Rejection of Management and Students’ Union Claims

The union refuted claims made in a press release dated December 7, 2024, by the LASU Students’ Union President and Public Relations Officer. The statement alleged that university activities were unaffected by the ongoing industrial action by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

Alignment with Joint Action Committee (JAC)

ASUU-LASU emphasized that the strike aligns with the directives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising all staff unions at LASU. A formal notification of the strike has been sent to both the Vice-Chancellor and the Governor of Lagos State, who is the Visitor to the university.

Conclusion

ASUU-LASU remains committed to resolving these pressing issues and seeks the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders. The union hopes for a swift resolution to ensure a harmonious learning environment at LASU.

By addressing these critical issues with clarity and structured communication, the ASUU-LASU strike seeks to push for equity and justice within the university system.
