Anyaoku Urges Abolishment of 1999 Constitution for Nigeria’s Progress

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has advocated for the removal of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that as long as the constitution remains in effect, the country will struggle to achieve its true potential.

During the launch event of The Noble Academic and Patriot: A Biography of Emeritus Professor Akinjide Osuntokun at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, Anyaoku criticized the constitution, describing it as a significant barrier to Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress.

Anyaoku also highlighted that Nigeria was on a path of unity and development before the military introduced a centralized system in January 1966, which has since shaped the nation’s political framework.
