Anglican Bishop Urges FG to Halt Emergence of New Terrorist Groups in Nigeria

The Anglican Bishop of Umuahia, Bishop Geoffrey Ibeabuchi, has voiced strong concern over the deteriorating security landscape across Nigeria. He expressed alarm that criminal activities by armed bandits are forcefully displacing villagers from their homes and farms, contributing significantly to the growing population of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Bishop made this urgent appeal at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Umuahia on Friday during his Presidential Address at the 2nd Session of the 11th Synod.

He advised the Federal Government to instruct security operatives to take decisive and immediate steps to halt the emergence and spread of new terrorist factions across different regions of the country.

Bishop Ibeabuchi highlighted that attacks on military installations, illegal arms proliferation, and unlawful extortion by some security personnel at checkpoints are placing more Nigerian citizens in jeopardy.

“There is no safe zone in Nigeria anymore, not even military barracks,” the Bishop declared. “Security operatives must act swiftly to curtail the growth of emerging terrorist cells across the nation.”

In a humanitarian plea, Bishop Ibeabuchi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He reasoned that releasing Kanu could potentially unveil those responsible for escalating violence and destruction in the South East under the guise of IPOB’s mission.

The Bishop also criticized the prevailing level of poverty nationwide, pointing out that the Federal Government’s failure to provide adequate palliatives following the removal of fuel subsidy has worsened the living conditions of the masses.

On a state level, Bishop Ibeabuchi praised Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for his commendable accomplishments so far. However, he warned the governor to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to sycophantic influences that may derail the administration’s objectives.
