Who is the Missing Cleric?
The missing individual is Professor Godwin Okpala, a retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi. Bishop Okpala was last seen on Friday morning, as confirmed by the Anglican Diocese of Nnewi in a public announcement on Saturday.
Details of the Disappearance
Bishop Ndubuisi Obi, the current leader of the Diocese, shared the unsettling news in a prayer appeal posted on the church’s official Facebook page.
- Bishop Okpala reportedly embarked on a journey to Umuchu, a community in Aguata Local Government Area, accompanied by his driver.
- Over 24 hours later, there has been no communication from them, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
- Neither the bishop, his driver, nor their vehicle has been located.
“We earnestly plead for your fervent prayers for their safety and swift return,” Bishop Obi urged.
Security Challenges in Umuchu
Umuchu, the bishop’s destination, has experienced increasing attacks by gunmen. Security operatives in the area have also been frequent targets of such assaults, underscoring the region’s growing insecurity.
Church’s Response
The leadership of the Anglican Diocese of Nnewi has taken swift action by contacting relevant authorities to investigate and address the situation.
“We trust in the Lord, whose watchful eyes never slumber, to bring our beloved Father in God and his driver back to us safely,” Bishop Obi added, reiterating his call for intercessory prayers.

The disappearance highlights the ongoing security challenges plaguing Nigeria’s South-East. States in the region, including Anambra, have seen a surge in attacks attributed to armed groups.
The Nigerian government has often blamed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the unrest, but the group has consistently denied involvement in these violent incidents. IPOB is an organization advocating for the creation of an independent state of Biafra, encompassing the South-East and parts of the South-South regions.
